What a weird book. It's mostly about depression, but then also sneakily about 9/11. Yeah, weird.
The idea of sleeping a year away is appealing to everyone, right? Anyway, this book explored that concept and what it might actually look like (if you are a pretty, privileged, white girl). Definitely depressing but also strangely relatable.

Wow definitely an experience this was... now me, personally, I would not touch this MC with a 39-and-a-half foot pole but I liked the way her inner monologue was meticulously written. Reminded me how depraved a human being can be, and I still don't feel like I truly understood her desire to take the year off. I expected more from her backstory than just a shitty upbringing. At the end of the day she remains a privileged, rich, Very skinny girl living in NYC who never learned how to like anything or anybody except that which brings her some sort of sadistic or absurd pleasure. Her connection to Trevor was absolutely disgusting to read/listen to. At this rate I genuinely don't understand what she expected to learn or feel after making herself feel nothing, and why she wanted to keep living at all.

The main character isn't likeable and doesn't really do much. I should have hated this book. Instead, I immediately added everything else Moshfegh has published to my stack and I won't be at all surprised if this is the best novel I'll read this year.

Was talking to my bf about the book, but he just didn’t get it but as a traumatized girl who was prescribed Seroquel, oh boy, do I get it.

[b:My Year of Rest and Relaxation|44279110|My Year of Rest and Relaxation|Ottessa Moshfegh|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1597676656l/44279110._SY75_.jpg|55508660] is undoubtedly an excellently constructed book, I simply found it repulsive. The shockingly detailed accounts of everyday human life were nausea inducing. It was kind of like hearing that Obama poops; I know it happens because I do it too, but I don't want to hear about it. Maybe this is what makes the book "good"; it goes where few other books have been before.
