I LOOOOOVED this book!!! I brought this along as one of my vacay reads for my trip to the Caribbean, and let me just say, matching your vacation read to where you are vacationing is a different level of having an immersive reading experience! Aside from that, its a shorter book than what I’m used to, and it read really easily. Not to mention that the love interest is a hot Irishman, AKA my weakness. I will also say that this romance is a slowburn. I honestly thought it wasn’t going to be since the love interest was introduced farily early in the book and the book itself isn’t that long, however, the first somewhat intimate scene didn’t happen until 80% of the way through, so if you don’t like slow burn romances, this might be a pass for you. Also, the spicy scenes aren;\’t that detailed/graphic.

But the book also does a great job of understanding individuality and being satisfied with yourself before having the opportunity to lose yourself in a relationship, which I greatly appreciated.

Another thing is that this book has a MAJOR TW for suicide, mentions of suicide, and a suicide note, which is quite literally the first page, so PLEASE be cautious about this.

10 months after the dead of her fiancée, Anna Beck is still floundering when she gets an alert on her phone remaindering that their sailing voyage was supposed to start. Deciding to throw caution to the wind, she ventures out on his sailboat intending to follow his plan down to Trinidad to the spot that they were supposed to get married. After a few treacherous days at sea, she decides to hire the kind Irishman who helped her out of a drunken encounter.

What follows is a sweet story about healing, love, and finding your own path, which may have included the cutest dog in the world!!

I thought it handed the discussions of suicide with grace and finesse, and way Anna was able to heal from the experience was beautiful to watch. The novel itself was short, sweet and didn't ramble. There were some spicy scenes but they felt like they were in service to the story and not just smut for smut sake. (Not that some good smut is a bad thing!!!)

5 out of 5 ⭐stars for this!

Keane is a NEW BOOK BOYFRIEND!!

With that said, this book heavily dealt with themes of suicide and grief; Anna's perspective was new to me and interesting.

The Float Plan by Trish Doller is a 2021 St. Martin’s Griffin publication.

After Anna’s fiancé, Ben, passes away, her life has been in limbo. When a reminder of a proposed round the world trip pops up, Anna makes a sudden, spur of the moment decision to take that trip, despite not being properly trained for such a journey. Reality sets in immediately after a scary near miss… or two.

Enter Keane, a professional sailor, who comes to Anna’s rescue after an embarrassing, drunken mistake. Anna hires Keane to help her navigate her journey, and to sail off on an unexpected, life altering journey of healing and new beginnings.

With so many reviews posted for this book, by now, you know this book deals with some very difficult subject matter. Please read and heed the warnings before you decide to read this book.

That said, while the story does deal with grief, and the various stages we normally recite, not necessarily applying to everyone in the same way- the author manages to approach the premise with a light touch.

Keane is very much a catalyst for that tone, as he’s a steady rock for Anna, not only with his sailing skills, but with his ability to understand what this journey is all about for Anna, offering her support and patience, as she slowly finds her way.

There is much to love about this book. I thought it was well-written, and the character development is realistic and inspiring. I loved the romantic elements and the tender chemistry between Anna and Keane.

This is a dual journey- a scenic, nautical adventure on one hand and an emotional journey of healing, acceptance, growth, and romance.

Overall, a journey through grief, which leads to personal growth, strength and renewal, and a lovely new life of love and adventure.

well, controversially, i hated this book.

it was good but once it marked the 70% mark, it started going downhill. i loved anna’s character development. her growth was amazing. i loved the disability representation in the book.

i wouldn’t say i loved the hero, he was extremely disloyal. i liked him at first, but he can’t even be loyal to the heroine. another thing about this book is that the major themes of it were depression and grief. the grief part was handled well. as i’ve said, anna’s character development was amazing; i think that part was done well. however, the depression theme wasn’t handled properly. for me, the depression representation was very stereotypical.

the book itself was lacking survival instincts, if this was real life, i don’t think they would’ve survived.

this book was a huge disappointment for me, i do not recommend it for anyone.

3.5/5 - I liked it and I don’t know if I’d read again but I liked it.

Definitely for you if you like:
- Easy, soft love
- Strangers to friends to lovers
- Sailing

tw: suicide, minor description of suicide, self harm, grief, depression

Anna is greiving after the passing of her fiancé and decides on a whim to take the boat trip they were supposed to take together. She’s determined to complete the voyage planned but after an awful first night of sailing, she decides to hire help to finish it.

She hires Keane, a professional sailor with a warm Irish accent, to help her. Keane is also dealing with how to move forward from a life he thought he had all planned out. As they understand one another’s losses and try to maintain friendly on a small boat, their connection continues to rise. The romance seems inevitable but they still need to continue on how to let go and how to plan for something brand new.

📚

So I liked this one. Just not as much as I thought I would. I got an ARC of the second in the series and adored it and thought I’d like this one too but the pace was just a little too slow. I think it’s fitting though with what grief does to your life and also sailing. Lots of patience, yeah? So I wasn’t too mad about it. I guess this is just a warning to say: It’s slow paced. The second one is definitely a little more lighthearted.

I think maybe the pace would’ve been better with a dual POV, maybe? Maybe that would’ve given too much away, I don’t know.

I did just love how their love was easy. It wasn’t hard or dramatic and filled with anxiety or nerves. It was just warm and knowing and like coming home. Keane was really the perfect man for it. I adored him.

Keane was just so dreamy though and I really loved him as a character. Honestly, loved Anna’s friend Cara and would love to read one about her! Reading these thoughts about Anna and her grief really was… not for the faint of heart. I can’t even begin to imagine the grief she felt and reading those moments of bargaining and anger and sadness was heavy.

I think the only thing I really wanna leave here is this quote because Trish Doller really summed up what I believe dealing with grief is like: “But I’m starting to understand how sadness and happiness can live side by side within a heart. And how that heart can keep on beating.”

Grief grows from love. It is simply love with nowhere to go.
