I don’t care if it’s for kids, this was classic Nancy Drew of my childhood and I loved it.

This is #18 in the Nancy Drew Diaries series. Nancy and her dad have recently done some work for the new owners of a renovated ski lodge featuring state of design environmental technologies and practices. So they have been invited by the owners to spend their two-week Christmas vacation as guests of the lodge. When her father is delayed, Nancy goes on alone until he can join her. Nancy also plans to investigate some strange happenings going on the lodge. When on her first trip down the bunny slope results in a badly broken leg requiring a huge cast, a wheel chair and a pair of binoculars. Things continue to get worse  and the threat of a new oil pipeline to run across the mountain gains momentum. Missing her best friends and co-detectives, Nancy is pleased to meet the two Hardy brothers, Frank and Tom, and find they are also investigating some funny stuff going on at the pipeline and they are able to help each other.

As the weather gets worse, hidden staircases, power outages, the food is tampered with, Nancy finds the danger. With her leg in a cast, her movement is limited to being an observer bring to mind  shades of “Rear Window”.

A middle-grade book, this is an entertaining update on the Classic Nancy Drew books. I found it entertaining and enjoyed some of the more quirky characters. Recommend to readers of middle grade mystery, Christmas themed books.

A fun modern Nancy Drew mystery with surprise guests
The Hardy Boys!<\spoiler>. Nancy is off to a ski resort for Christmas and the twists and turns of the hill won't be the only surprises she finds.

Not a trigger warning but general content warning for parents: some violence and scary moments, some social media negativity, and some police misbehaving.

This book absolutely has no business being as good as it was. For a book with such a young target demo though, it was kind of shocking how overtly political it was. Justice reform? Insider trading? Oil lobbyists? What kid is gonna even know an eighth of the nuance there?

This was honestly probably once of the best mystery plots I have ever had the pleasure of reading in my entire life. Just when you think it can’t get crazier, it does. When I say unpredictable, but deliciously plausible (the clues are there, so it’s not a cop-out mystery like some novels where the culprit is a secret twin or whatever).

Also, like this was quite a violent book since it’s aimed at elementary schoolers. Knife throwings? Axes? Crossbows? High-speed chases? Multiple people in this book almost died multiple times each! This could probably easily be adapted into a YA book.

I’m not 100% sure on the ghostwriting set-up for this series, but everyone who worked on this book deserves a raise because WOW.

A Nancy Drew Christmas by Carolyn Keene

This one was a decent mystery with a sky resort having difficulties and Nancy is on the job. Nancy breaks her leg and still goes forward to try to solve a mystery. Oh by the way the Hardy boys show up in the mystery as well. I do like the message about the resort wanting to go green and not supporting non green businesses.

There were a few twists and it made the story enjoyable. I still felt though it fell just short maybe because Nancy Drew just doesn't bring me back to my younger years when I really loved reading the mysteries of her and the Hardy boys.

I still think it is worth the read it has a decent mystery with the twists but maybe more for a younger person like a teen would enjoy this book much better.
