It draws you in with an intriguing question for a title, and then answers that question in the opening chapter. Why are the vibes at this house so rancid? It's because of the spooky fungus. The fact that it's so easy to figure out whats going on would be fine if the characters were more interesting but unfortunately most of them didn't really do it for me. I found the world building to be the most interesting part with a culture in which soldiers give up their genders when they swear an oath, and the first inclusion of Neo-pronouns I've read in book which is super cool. I might read the second one some other time.

Horror really isn’t my genre. Something about the horror novels I have read just don’t capture my attention or intrigue me enough to immerse myself into it.

This book does a great job at introducing a threat and beginning to unweave the story behind it. There was more of a mystery vibe mixed with body-horror that was only interesting in the last third of the book.

The ending and events leading up to the final discovery were very enjoyable and made up for the seemingly slow burning beginning.
