I listen to this book because I wanted something easy and breezy, and after working in a bookshop where we probably where not pro keys I was like cool this will be exactly it.
And now it’s 2.35 in the morning and I woke my partner up because I was sobbing I can say this was not it.
It was so engaging, incredibly narrated, heartfelt and heartbreakingly human, brimming with the best and worst of people on micro levels, political and generational.
If Sally Rooney knows what it’s like to be a modern female Irish writer it’s because she learnt from Marian Keyes.

At first I was a little put off - this is a very long book about so many people they had to include a family tree and it includes multiple points of view and a dreaded reverse timeline. But wow - I loved (or hated) everybody in this book and needed to know that everybody was going to be okay. I found it so interesting that the main characters were three brothers who continued to spend their forties together despite pretty much full separation from their horrible parents. I adored the three sisters-in-Law and all the lovely bunnies. Libby says it took me just over 11 hours to read 642 pages. Ed and Johnny were lovely interesting male characters and Liam was just there to show how horrible they could have been.
I have been a long-time reader of Marian Keyes and love her books. Grown Ups definitely had a lot of her wit and Irish charm as she tells the story of three brothers, Ed, Liam and Johnny and their crazy family. The three did not grow up with the easiest of parents and so there's a sort of crazy bonding that happens due to this. As with any family, you can have some drama and it all starts with Cara, who has hit her head, coming out with all sorts of secrets and truths at a family dinner. The story then jumps backwards and delves into the crazy relationships this family has with one another. While I do love Keyes humor and wit this book just rang long for me and was confusing at times with all the family members and their dynamics. It also was a bit on the darker side than I normally expect from this author. Grown Ups was definitely not a favorite of mine but I will definitely continue to read Keyes' books in the future.
This is a book that I wish GoodReads had a 1/2 star mark. It's a 3.5/5 for me.
The characters are portrayed in rich detail even with the third person narrative it allowed you to see in each person's perspective. The story covered various intertwining storylines of the Casey family and it showed every relationship has it's up and downs no matter how good it looks from the outside.
I did find the main event the story was building to somewhat anti-climatic and enjoyed the play out of the events leading up to it more interesting. But maybe that is also a sign of a good lead up.
I would still recommend this book for a fairly easy to read family drama with a few heavier issues within including disordered eating and mental health topics.

Whilst I love Marian Keyes work usually, I really wasn’t a huge fan of Grown Ups. Once I got to about fifty percent of the way through this book, I actually wanted to read it, however it should not take me half a book to become interested.
The main issues for me were that there were just far too many characters to keep track off, as well as it just being far to long winded. Given the amount of characters involved, I really felt there wasn’t much building of their characteristics until it was too late. If the story’d had fewer characters to follow then I feel like their development, and my investment in their issues would have been much more.
Over all, it was just okay.
