Reading Under the Covers

In a galaxy powered by the current, everyone has a gift

That is a very intriguing and engaging sentence on a blurb that makes you want to read the book but its just a façade for this book is awful.

It’s just lacking and I absolutely hated it.

I was completely bored and very, incredibly confused by the plot.

I mean what plot?

This book had no plot or well one in which I couldn’t fathom. I couldn’t figure out the plot of the book I was just reading which is annoying because I like a plot. I read to finish the book but I so desperately just didn’t want to finish it.

The only good thing about this book was the character building. It’s like the author forgot there was a plot and just wanted to put words onto a page. She built the characters up but that’s it. The lack of plot is what breaks this book.

The character in terms of development of friendship/relationship was okay. It wasn’t like you couldn’t see what was coming and that was boring.

I have no plans to continue with this story. I used to like Veronica Roth’s ability to tell stories but this just wasn’t talent, it was pure rubbish and I really didn’t like it.

This book is set in such an interesting world I haven’t read/seen before, which is so fun to learn about! I really did enjoy reading about the unique characters set in space!

I must say I’ve found this book a little slow paced at some points, which caused me to get distracted from reading easily. It was confusing at some points too, with all the names/phrases from this new world (when finishing I realised there was a “glossary” in the back of the book).

ok
Don't have the right words but I can firmly say that it was kinda slow. It got exciting at some point then I got to the end a few pages later.
I've got something I'll rant about after I read the second book because... well, it's me.

I was lucky enough to recive and advanced reader copy of Veronica Roth's Divergent in early 2011 and have followed her with great expectation ever since, so it was with a grin on my face I opened my box to find Carve The Mark. I will say it did not disappoint. In fact it is a stronger story and better writing than we saw in the Divergent Series. When an author debuts to such acclaim one always wonders if they will be able to follow it up, Roth has done that and more.

Carve the Mark, while taking place in a different universe, has the feel of historical fiction, the societies and customs of the two peoples are balanced and authentic. The tribal feel of the peoples on Thuvhe mixed with space age technology and ships creates a fresh backdrop for a story as old as time. What happens when a boy and a girl from rival factions meet and fall in love has been told so many times that it often is predictable and boring but Roth keeps it feeling fresh with flawed characters who know their worth if not their value.
If Carve the Mark is any example of Roth's growth as a writer she is well on her way to being a long-term favorite.
