The audiobook gets a lower rating because the narrator whispers too much. Sometimes I wouldn't even be able to hear it. The only reason I didn't miss anything important is because I was reading along with the book. I don't know how he got away with the whispering, or maybe they could hear him then. I could not hear a thing! Not to say his narrating is bad, he just whispered too much, like use a stage whisper so we can hear you sir!
I couldn't stand Tomas by the end, and dreaded his chapters. Pug is still my favourite and I enjoyed Arutha and Martin's stories.
For a book that's supposed to be about Pug, though, this one did not have enough Pug. It wasn't bad, though, so I'm not complaining too much. I just wish we'd been made aware that it's not just about one person and has many POVs.

Boring. Terribly boring, with weird racist telling of "Asian-like aliens are evil and slave owners" and all the white people are good guys. Full of white men fantasy wet dreams.
Also hate how the women are written, they're all wifes and girlfriends, even the capable, wise, and gorgeous Elf Queen became submissive wife to a human boy... The romantic chemistry is non-existent between each pair of couple, I have no idea why or how they fell in love. A few of the women had potential to become good characters, but they just ended up being sidelined as love interest and and all of them need protection from the big strong mascho manly man.
The writing is so bland, even plain lettuce has more flavour. I'm just bored out of my mind the whole way through. Could not connect to any characters at all, didn't give a shit of what's going on or who died who lived. They all kinda have one or two key personality traits and all the characters blends together, lack of distinction between the voices.

I'm not sure what people see in this book, the characters have minimal personality especially the female characters. At any given point in time they could've killed a character off and you wouldn't care and In fact they do with Roland and again no one cares. The story apart from somehow skipping large chunks of time yet being painfully slow is also very predictable with foreshadowing as subtle as fluoro. Character titles are their own paragraphs and you'll never convince me that many of the names don't originate from face planting a keyboard. Somehow even a centuries old respected elven queen can be written in such a way it sets feminism back a decade. Dont forget Katala who after being away from MMC for 4yrs has been doing nothing but raising his son lovingly named after his heritage and nothing else and is immediately happy to take him back, not that he actually asks her, he just states that he is taking her as his wife and thats that. I would not read this again nor am I likely to ever continue the series and possibly nothing ever by this writer again.
Im rather torn regarding Magician, on one hand it was a fun, entertaining lord of the rings inspired romp, on the other, at times, it seemed to show its age more than I would have liked.
I think if I had read this before the modern fantasy books I have read, I would have enjoyed this more.
Pug was very interesting.
Tomas grew boring for me, although at one point had the most potential.
Arutha also had potential, but just when I started to enjoy his story it would swap perspectives and leave me short of the satisfaction I had been craving.
The plot was interesting yet somewhat lacking in real motivations for the Tsurani.
The story itself had constant small time jumps that always felt jarring to me, which was odd as I have read many books that have had time jumps but for some reason in this book they felt unnecessary or done poorly.
The world was familiar medieval fantasy mixed with some oddities, which is fine.
I enjoyed the book and was entertained the whole time yet I dont feel an urge to read more, I will however continue with this series hoping to mine the gold that I have been promised is in this series.

I was drawn into this world from the start. Fantastic characters that I (mostly) cared about and an exciting story. There is a big caveat to my enjoyment of the story though, which is the sexist way Feist writes women that makes it feel quite dated to read and I found myself cringing at the moments where “her eyes were moist with emotion” and Feist’s obsession with what he sees as the exciting time when girls are transforming into women. That got a bit creepy. So read it if you can handle those moments and you’ll find a wonderful world to lose yourself in.
