Ich hab überlegt, ob ich hier eine lange Rezension mit Zitaten schreiben soll, aber das würde dem Buch eh nicht gerecht werden. Es ist einfach zu gut, zu interessant, zu genau-das-was-mich-interessiert dafür. Außerdem müsste ich dann das halbe Buch zitieren und das ist eher schwierig.

Guter Einstieg, wenn man noch Nichts mit Linguistik am Hut hatte oder sich bislang wenig Gedanken über die Funktionen und Grenzen von Sprache gemacht hat. Als Linguistin mit einem Faible für genau diese Dinge war hier wenig Neues für mich persönlich dabei, ich kann das Buch aber auf jeden Fall empfehlen.

I had somehow misguided expectations after reading the synopsis; I thought there was going to be a heavier linguistic and academic approach, whereas the book has a much wider scope and often takes the author's own experiences as the starting point for general reflections.
There were some digressions that I wasn't interested in as much and found a bit too tangential. Still, it was a wortwhile read that offered many incisive and thought-provoking observations. I especially liked the extended metaphor of a language museum inhabited by the "unnamed" (those that are considered the norm and not in need of a definition) and the "named" (those outside of the norm that must be clearly defined and categorized).

Sehr schön geschrieben, der Schreibstil hat mir total gut gefallen und ist vielleicht der Hauptgrund, dass ich das Buch so mochte, obwohl ich natürlich auch an den Sachen, die sie sagt, nichts auszusetzen habe, sie erklärt vor allem auch alles sehr gut und verständlich. Ich hätte es ganz cool gefunden, wenn das Buch ein bisschen mehr linguistische Ansätze oder Untersuchungen aufgegriffen hätte, auch wenn die ganzen persönlichen Erzählungen sehr gut reingepasst haben, ich hatte nur ein bisschen einen anderen Fokus erwartet. Kommt auf meine Liste von potenziellen Weihnachtsgeschenken für meinen Vater
