Starting one of my fav series of all time. Ever. Mostly because It is the first epic series I read 40 years ago.

This was a tough one to complete. You can definitely tell that this novel bridges the gap between Tolkein-esque fantasy and modern day fantasy. The charcter of Thomas Convenant is NOT a nice guy. He is a whiner throughout. The world building is quite extensive and if you are not use to reading earlier fantasy then you will be lost. Also, if you can get past that "one scene" (everyone knows which scene I am referring to) you will be in for a treat. I did enjoy it but found myself bored at times with the "quest". Overall I give it a 3.5 to 4 star.

I'm torn on how to review this book. It is without a doubt very well written, however, I found it terribly boring and the main character completely unmotivating. I would rename him "Thomas the Complainer". Granted, the experiences Thomas had probably made his reactions all the more realistic, but I wanted to slap him and say "We know you're the hero; your name is on the cover. Just shut up and get on with it!"

I'm surprised this book did as well as it did. Slow pace and a main character you hate more page by page I would imagine would have made it difficult to publish, let alone sell. It was Tolkien meets Michael Moorcock. No thanks!

I'm glad I took my husband's advice on this one. Thomas Covenant is such an interesting character. I think Donaldson did an amazing job characterizing him. Of course some of Covenant's actions are despicable, but I think a sugar-coated story would not have been true to his experiences. Keep in mind, his most objectionable acts were committed while he thought he was dreaming. Personally, I think casting Covenant as an anti-hero made for a unique series. I certainly plan on reading this one again.

DID NOT FINISH

I am not a true fan of epic fantasy but I’m generally not against this genre. So when I find out that this book fulfills perfectly one of my more demanding challenges, I started it with high hopes.

And everything looked nice in the beginning. Thomas, the hero suffers from leprosy and the first few chapters focus on his bleak life with the disease. This part is really good, I got attached to Thomas and generally enjoyed the story.

But then, out of sudden, you are thrown into some epic fantasy plot. Just like that, Thomas is moved to some parallel fantasy world. He doesn’t find it strange but, trust me, I did. I was definitely confused by this rapid introduction of a completely new world and the beginning of some complex plot. But I was getting over it and working it out.

The book is a pretty fast read and I was truly getting into the story. Unfortunately, at this point the story becomes somehow less interesting. It drags a bit. Then Thomas makes something so horrible and unforgiven that I completely lost my sympathy for him. I was trying to get over it but his lack of remorse is too much. I read another chapter or two, but I just couldn’t bear it anymore. The story is not getting any better and my strong negative feelings toward the hero made me to left this book unfinished.

I can only hope that Thomas’ actions will be punished at some point of the story, but I do not intend to read this book just to find out. I seriously hesitated how to rate this book. Ultimately, I decided to give it two stars because the beginning is very good and probably, if I really wanted to, I would be able to force myself to read this book to the end.

Ive re read this over they ears and two things always stand out. The first is Donaldson's tendency to use words that not people do not use in normal speech. Not necessarily old fashioned speech, but more like he's trying to impress the reader with his extensive vocabulary. The second thing is how he uses all words to capture emotion. I always feel as though I've been through an emotional whirlwind when reading these books.

Sub-Tolkien quest with a ring. Terribly written, with an anti-hero so one-dimensional that at one point the author has him rape a child just to prove to readers how amoral the character is. I attempted this book when I was 13, but gave up. I've now read it the whole way through so that you don't have to.

I really enjoyed this book i cant believe i waited so long to read it. Full review to come.

Review of why this was so boring to be added later.
