When You Trap a Tiger

This is an exquisite novel. It's the kind of story I wish I could've read years ago, but also one I think I've been reading my entire life.

(Did that make sense? Probably not. What I'm saying is, it's a good book and you should read it)

Audiobook was not the way to go with this one.

Lily, her mother and sister are moving back in with her maternal grandmother, or Halmoni. Once they arrive, Lily finds her grandmother exhibiting some strange behavior and learns her grandmother has brain cancer. Having lost her father in the recent past to a car accident, Lily is devastated at the thought of losing her mother and wants to do everything she can to save her. The story is woven with traditional Korean stories about a tiger girl, and Lily works with a tiger to set free some stories her grandmother stole as a girl. Lily is hopeful she can save her grandmother....

This was another heartrenching story of loss. Beautifully written, I enjoyed reading the Korean stories and cultural pieces. You can feel Lily's sorrow as she navigates the events in her life. 5 stars!

This books is fantastic for Middle School. There is so much that you can hit on when it comes to language arts like symbolism and figurative language. However, there is also a lot you can discuss outside of the core subject like:
Grief - The main character has lost her father in a car accident years prior and she does not remember much about him. She also ends up losing her grandmother to brain cancer at the end of the book.
Race - The family is Korean-American which plays a big role in the story. Her grandma doesn't quite fit in to the town because of her culture and people not really understanding her. It also touches on the negative history between the USA and Korea.
History - This book talks about discussing and learning your history even if it is hard to stomach or makes your sad. It is still important to know.
Stereotypes - The main character does not want to be a "QAG" which is a Quiet Asian Girl. This really shapes some of her decisions throughout the book.
LGBTQ+ - At the end of the book, the main character figures out that her sister is dating the girl from the library. It really isn't a big deal in the story, but does show some diversity and could lead to conversations.
Identity - The main character is learning a lot about herself throughout the book like realizing who she is as a Korean-American girl and how she can be both nervous and courageous. She goes through times when she surprises herself and realizes she is capable of being different from what she personally thought about herself (good and bad).

A slow start builds to a beautiful, heart-wrenching climax. I loved the interwoven threads of storytelling, reality, fantasy, belief, the immigrant experience, and Korean history and identity.

Fans of magic realism and of Grace Lin's Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, and Kelly Barnhill's The Girl Who Drank the Moon will love this story.
