Very beautiful but it took me awhile to read it. It's a very dense book, full of poetic language that I underlined incessantly!

This is the story of the lifelong friendship of two Chilean women - Violeta and Josepha, both artists. The Antigua in the title is the small city in Guatemala, where the story ends.It is the story of how past and future generations in our families are with us and call to us. It is easy to see why Violeta is drawn to Mexico and Central America, with their tropical climates and color. The book, like Violeta's life, has two halves. The first half in Chile is emotionally heavy, at times dark, and sad. The second half, in Antigua, is a complete contrast as it is full of hope and color.

I really loved this book - the depiction of women's friendships throughout their lives resonated with me. The fact that the denouement takes place in Guatemala, of course, made me love it. It's a lovely story about sticking with your friend through thick and thin and dealing with the sorrow that life can send your way.

It was a very interesting reading, looking at Latin America from a perspective of two Chilean women, who lived through country's transformation. One is a famous singer who neglected her family for her career and the other one is an architect living with an abusive man. There is a tragedy and it's overcoming. It's about tradition, one's roots and marital and family ties. It's different from the traditional view of a woman and I liked it for that. I really want now to move to Antigua to Guatemala ;)
