Perspective:  first
Tense: past
POV:  dual

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ 4: Brown Girl Spicy
(Multiple descriptive and detailed open door scenes; smut is prominent but it does not overtake plot)
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3: Good, middle of the road. (Redeeming qualities tip the scale.)

Review:
This was my least favorite of Max Walker’s books so far. It had one of the more scary mysteries, but it felt underdeveloped.
While we did get a peek into the situation at the end of the previous book, I almost wish that what Tristan had been experiencing had been sprinkled in a little more.
Gabe, the detective from Stonewall
felt particularly odd for me. He told Tristan that there were no rules against dating a client, and obviously we’ve read about plenty of Stonewall detectives falling for the person who hired them, but to just say that felt ignorant. Especially for someone from the new “Elite” division! Even I, as an average person, know that being close to someone can impair your judgement!

The relationship between Gabe and Tristan also felt
rushed, like it came out of nowhere. I didn’t feel like the chemistry had built enough to really justify their first hookup or how quickly they fell in love.

I do hope we continue to get more Stonewall stories. We did get mentions of someone of Gabe’s friends and colleagues in the Elite division, and that could be an exciting thread to follow!

I have loved every book in this series and Gabriel & Tristan’s story might be my new favorite of the bunch. I was hooked from page one and read this in one sitting. I could not put it down! This author has a way with captivating you from page one and weaving so many great twists and turns into each book. If you’re a romantic suspense fan, I definitely recommend this book and series!

The couple is cute and the sex scenes are decent. But omg the level of stupidity in the plot is insane. This is a serial killer, the FBI is involved, Gabe just does things for the plot as if he’s never done his job before. Just really badly written plot. I’ve seen garbage cop propaganda CSI episodes with better plotting

The mystery element really ratched up in this book and it felt like there were some really big stakes on the line. There were definitely lots of hints towards who the killer was which helped me to guess it before it was revealed. Some really tense moments related to this part of the plot as well.

I really liked Tristen and Gabriel, they fit together really well and it was good to show that they could help each other through the bad as well as the good. They trusted each other 100%. It was nice to see Tristan become lighter and get his muse back by the end of the book because he really wasn't in a good head space to begin with. It was also nice to see Gabriel open up and be more vocal than we saw him at the beginning.

Some minor editing issues e.g. the wrong name used or one sentence here and there from the wrong pov.

But overally I enjoyed this book, I really got into the murder plot and I liked that the book club books reflect their lives.
