Whoa, what just happened??? This book is simply marvelous! Especially the last like 100 pages. Although I was forewarned of the sudden change of pace (thanks amanda), I was still caught off guard by the complete drastic-ness of it. I'll admit it, I cried...gah! Why is it that the things you hate to have happen in a story are what make it so much better? When an author braves away from the happily into the not-quite-so-happily-ever-after ending/cliffhanger, you never know where the characters may end up, which makes the story much more relatable and much less predictable. Loved it and can't wait for the next!

There was so much hype about this book which made me have high expectations for it especially it winning the best book on Goodreads for 2011. I couldn't give this book 5 stars because I felt that the beginning was really good, the middle was sooooo drawn out and it was like 80% of the book and then the ending was super good. Twice while I was reading this book, I sat this down for a day and read something else just because I was kind of bored of it. I just felt like there was just so much story that was around the training to figure out which job you would or wouldn't have once you were put into your new faction.

Tris was just ok. I liked her in the beginning because she was super scared and she was very true to her feelings. But then a couple times throughout the book she got kind of whiny especially when her relationship with Four was progressing. She seem to kind of get a little lovey dovey which annoyed me. If people where to compare her to Katniss, Katniss never really let love get in her way which I think made her a stronger female role. I did however love Four better than Peeta and Gale. I think it might have been since he was older ;-)

I thought the setting was awesome! Since I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and spent a good part of my time in the city, I was able to really picture where they were talking about in the book. Therefore I thought the imagery was so clear in the story. But it was so interesting how the author made it look totally changed with how there is like a wall surrounding the city and how things kind of look broken down which most dystopian settings are like.

The whole aspect of factions was interesting. I felt like since Hunger Games came out, every dystopian novel that has come out has some sort of ceremony that you do when you reach the age of 16 but none of the other novels have put you into different categories, mainly match you up with a partner for life. Throughout the book, I was thinking which faction would I be in. I was thinking either Amity or Erudite but not sure.

I think I might read on in the series but I'm not sure yet.

This would be a great new series for those that like the Hunger Games but I don't know if the size of the story will deter teens from reading this series.

I know I'm a bit "divergent" in my opinion, but for me this book was just meh. I finished it after watching the movie and I am surprised to say that I enjoyed the movie more than the book.

The author's writing style was a bit dull and forced. I often have difficulty buying into a first-person, present-tense narration. I also struggled with some of Tris's descriptions of the adrenaline rush she felt after punching, kicking, or otherwise hurting someone; and with the underlying theme of "faction over family" in the book. These are not thoughts to plant in the young minds of the target audience here.

I am usually a fan of the dystopian novel; I'm just not sure this adds anything worthwhile to the genre.

It was a fun book to read. I watched the movie when it came out and in the beginning I had a lot of the movie scenes in my head, but soon the story became its own thing. I do think that the conflict was to short, because there where only like sixty pages left when it really went down. And there was no conclusion. After all, I really liked it. Much better than the movie.

Ok, yes it is a young adult book, but I totally dug it. I stayed up way too late to finish it. I did like that the female main character wasn't a "woe is me" or "why do people like me" sort.

this book is so fucking stupid
the main character is stupid
everyone around her is stupid
the whole world building is stupid
how the fuck did this senseless bullshit get published
this offers no merit to the world
it just exists as regurgitated garbage which gets consumed by kids and preetens who don't know any better
veronica roth is a non-entity to me
to consider this book suitable for reading is an absurd delusion of the highest caliber
every editor and publisher who approved this should go behind bars for their crimes against literature
this shit makes me feel like i could become the next fucking shakespeare
it's beyond unclear to me how one can write such garbage but still be successful because the populace is such brainless morons that fall for tropes with no depth and thought put behind them
this book is like a crude Frankenstein's monster but unlike Frankenstein the person who put it together is a braindead ape
it's like you gave tropes to a fucking toddler and told it to put them together in a book as a cruel game of scrabble which inflicts pain on the reader
every character is so shallow i don't even perceive them as characters they're merely a collection of letters on my screen that makes up a name
this book defiles every single virtue that literary fiction could bring you
to hand this book to someone is to insult their intelligence and capacity for even the slightest bit of critical thought
the world building is so incredibly thoughtless it makes me wonder if veronica has put any thought in it beyond the words "dystopian" and "factions"
this book makes me seethe as it exemplifies everything wrong with modern literature
it's nothing but a meaningless cash grab designed for the masses
it goes against every principle of art
this should get taught in schools as the example of what a HUSK of a literary work looks like
