There seemed to be a ton more relationship stuff happening in this volume. I hated it when Rick and Tyrese fought because I had so enjoyed their friendship in the last volume. It seemed like Tyrese would always have Rick’s back and then the big blow up. I loved Rick’s speech in the end and his declaration that the zombies are not the walking dead, but the humans are. Good volume.
Pretty lackluster and predictable, compared to some of the previous volumes in the series. The art, plot, and characters all felt a bit weak, despite or perhaps because of the epic eponymous speech of a conclusion. I'll still read the next volumes, but it feels a bit like grasping at soap opera straws to inject new drama into the world; there are, after all, only so many ways to get cornered by zombies and have the outcome still be interesting.
Four books in and I'm still gripped. With this volume it feels like the series solidifies and 'arrives'. I'm increasingly suspicious of Rick, the main character, as he goes on a real power trip. I can't work out whether Kirkman wants the reader to side with Rick, or whether he'll keep it ambiguous. I hope the latter! I wonder about what possible redemption there could be in this story, where human beings are just hungry meat-machines, wither nothing to really differentiate between the living and the dead. I hope there's a light to be found somewhere, because if there isn't I'll lose the will to carry on. If there's no reason for the characters to keep on living, there won't be a reason for me to keep on reading.

While I continue to like this series, the dialogue for this installment was too artificial to rank it as five stars. The philosophical question presented here is how people maintain their humanity in a world where they must kill to survive. A question made tougher to grapple in this volume because the characters are not merely killing the undead. While the theme explored here was fantastic, the dialogue, and even some action, was heavy-handed. Too many people were creeping away to hook up and have sex. The soap opera treatment of love and betrayal, along with the stilted dialogue, lessened the overall zing of the volume's final declaration.
However, as this group of survivors continues to build their new world. I will continue to read. I'm curious about how much their humanity will deteriorate. What will constitute the new normal in the post-apocalyptic zombie world?
