Adorable illustrations in a surprising book that "rotates" when you read it. Be prepared to hold this book differently when sharing it with others.

This is such a fun book that would be great for a story time! The interactive aspect of it and the use of fun onomatopoeia's make this book so much fun. The information at the end about kingfischer's would be a great lead in if you were doing a unit on different birds, sea birds, etc. This book also shows a lot of teamwork and looking out for and trying to help others as the other animals try to slow down Mel and keep him from falling to the ground. Great book!

First, I love Kingfishers.  They soon-to-be, if not already, the new mascot of UIUC.  Hail to the Orange!  Mel decides it's time to fly and they find the courage to take the leap.  I love that this book is in a different orientation because Mel is falling.  Once you're used to it, the book flips!  It's a fun way to tell a story about a bird.  We meet a few other creatures who offer help along the way.  I love that Mel is courageous and is sure of themselves.

We chose this book for a Story Stroll.

Not going to lie, I liked this one because the main character shares my nick name :)

The orientation of the book was really interesting though! I can see why it is a Caldecott Honor!

I adored this story about a little bird named Mel who has enough confidence in herself to try flying for the first time, even though everyone around her worries and doesn’t think she can do it. I was a little turned off at first by the orientation of the book, but when you make the full turn, it’s actually a pretty fun and clever way to format the story.
