Reread 2019: Upon this reread I have deiced to lower my rating to a four. I still love this book and the nostalgia is real. I love Ian and Wanda so much. I had forgotten how in love I am with Ian. However, this book is not up to the standards that I hold five-star books to these days. Therefore, I decided to lower it to a four star.

SOOOOOO GOOD

I have to be honest, I did not like Twilight and went into this book hoping that Stephenie Meyer would redeem herself. The beginning of the book had me very interested and I thought that even though the concept wasn't new, I liked her take on it and then ... the book absolutely tanked.

Spolier alert:
SpoilerHow long can they be in a cave doing nothing? And another sports game in a book where it doesn't even make sense? My biggest gripe (and forgive me for forgetting character names here), but the main 'soul' is absolutely fine with taking over human bodies and destroying the individual, but the ONE time that she sees a soul die because the humans are trying to extract it and she flies off the handle saying the humans are murderers?? And then the humans actually "console" her and apologize? The 'souls' have raped mankind and when mankind tries to stop it, that's when it is just too much?? Oh and don't even get me started on the stupid names of their medicines.

This book is contrived, and everything felt forced, from the dialog to the romance to the tension to the hours of gardening and finding your way in the dark. Even the bad guy feels like he's just a douchebag that needs a good slap, not anyone to actually be afraid of. I'm done giving Meyers a chance

This book is said to be a sci-fi book for those that don't like sci-fi. Well, I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi and I LOVE The Host. I reread this (after having read it the first time around in 2008) and it took me a long time because I just have not been into reading this month.

I will warn you. I've had many people comment that they started this, couldn't get into it, and gave up. In 2008 I almost did the same thing. It's hard to get into at first but the beginning is needed to explain some back story. But once you get into it it pulls you in. The world that Wanderer and Melanie find, the love triangle, the fight for survival - it will all pull you in.

And PLEASE do me a favor. Read the book. Don't go see the movie. The movie was simply "eh" and they changed way too much of it for my taste.

The book though? Is wonderful.

Wow is a good summary of what I thought when I finally set this book down after two days of reading. Stephenie Meyer is an excellent author and I will be reading any books that she publishes in the future with or with out vampires. I admit I was a bit hesitant about the book, but my doubts were put to rest after about the first chapter. I love the was she makes love stories so interesting and different. From original vampire love stories now to alien human love triangles. I don't know how she comes up with this stuff but I love it and will continue to be an avid fan of her books.

this is.... different so far.

it was really hard for me to get into this book, because i had just finished the twilight series, and really enjoyed that (well, with the exception of the last book!).

however, as i kept reading, i found i really enjoyed it; it was pretty science fiction-y (alien host "soul" inhabiting a human body, who refuses to totally give up her own identity, then goes back to find her human friends/family, and ends up living with a hidden sect of humans). but i really enjoyed it.

once again SM seems to want to give that "perfect" ending, which i don't think is necessary to have a good story...

Ooh, she does good adult books too.

It's hard to get through the beginning, but after that the book really takes of

Definitely some inconsistencies, nice nostalgic read

I feel like most people know the basic plot of this book, so I'm going to skip over that, but I will note that I did not see the movie nor do I have any intention of doing so. Also worth noting: I read this book because I didn't like the Twilight saga at all, but I had heard that this book was SO different that I gave it a shot.

And it is really different. There's this weird love-triange-esque thing, but it's more like a deformed square, and rather than splitting this book up into multiple tomes (although supposedly there are more coming), everything stayed as one without the extra stuff to dilute it.

That being said, I liked it, but I didn't love it. You spend the entire book knowing that there is no way for this to work out, but then there are the occasional cop outs in places (that part is like Twilight). I get the feeling Stephanie Meyer likes the anticipation of pandemonium but can't bring herself to follow through. That annoys me. COMMIT!!!

Also, Wanderer: so annoying at spots, but in the obnoxious I know you mean well, but I want to punch you in the face all the same type way. Melanie is such a break from Meyer's other female protagonists. Yes, she might not be considered the protagonist, but I mean, come on, this is one giant gray area all things considered.

The boy Jamie: emotional extortion. I have a soft spot for kids in dystopian-esque situations. Don't judge me.

Strong start - great concept.
