Good book, but the first few chapters are on the slow side. Also, it's much better than the movie made it out to be.
If she doesn't finish this trilogy herself she dang better bequeath the masterpiece to someone else who will!!

To už o perfektnosti té knihy něco říká, ne? :)

Well holy freaking cow I actually liked I guess the way to read her books in to go into it with zero expectations and intending to hate it. Seriously, I wish Wanderer was Bella. So much more likable. And Ian....ah, that was just too cute. I surprisingly didn't find her to be babbling as much in this book. I know several people did find it a bit dragging in the middle. I did not this time, but all her other books she does ramble.
This was a much more interesting topic compared to "Twilight". The writing still wasn't the best but I found it much easier to enjoy.
So, while there were a lot of things I enjoyed about this book, something bothered me about it. It wasn't until I read a review of the Twilight movie that I understood what it was. Despite the female protagonist/heroine of the book, the reoccuring themes of misogyny and masochism are hard to get past. The man she loves is understandably upset that his girlfriend's body is being inhabited by an alien "soul" but the repeated beatings that happen to her by his hand, and the hands of other men in the book, are disturbing. This is made all the more disturbing by her persistant feelings for him. I doubt it is meant to, but this scenario recalls that of a domestic abuse victim, rather than that of a love story. This book is about emotional struggle and what it means to be human, but I could have done with out this particular aspect of it especially as it is aimed towards a younger, impressionable audience.
I was pleasantly surprised by The Host. Many reviews I'd read mentioned that it was hard to understand and get into, unlike her wildly popular Twilight books. It did take some getting used to, wrapping my mind around the characters and who was who, but the more I read, the more I was drawn in.
It is a poignant story about humanity and the ideals which should bind us together as a human race - love, compassion, treating each other as equals. And, quite simply its a love story. The heroine, although her body was being held captive by the soul, the power of her love for her brother and her man drive the soul in her body to search for them and protect them from those trying to abduct the other humans. By the end of the book, the focus was on Wanderer, the soul, and I felt Melanie's side of the story was left by the wayside. After pulling for her through the entire book and hoping that Melanie would get her body and her life back, I was disappointed that Meyer chose not to reveal that portion of the story to the readers. Instead it focused on the Soul's point of view. Overall, a good read and a great story.
