It's rare that an author can follow-up with another hugely successful book after doing it the first time, and Stephanie Meyer is not able to do it with "The Host."
It happens to the best of them (like J.K. Rolling) when her first book after the Harry Potter series was the abysmally awful "The Casual Vacancy." She did, however, redeem herself somewhat with "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them."
In the future, Meyers may be able to do the same, but I'm sure her Twilight Saga series will be her shining moment and it may be impossible for her to outdo that series of books and movies' popularity.
As a writer, I know that a writer must write, but perhaps after such huge successes like the Potter and Twilight series of books and movies, a writer should write for herself/himself only and stand on her/his laurels and enjoy the never-ending royalty and residual checks.

It took me a few months to actually start reading this book...maybe I was apprehensive that I wouldn't like it as much as the Twilight series. My only regret is that I had read it sooner, because I loved it. I really enjoy Meyer's writing and stories - the way she wraps things up. I love it. Little sci-fi, some good romance. Loved it.
Really, really good book. Stephenie does not disappoint with her story telling ability and flair for heart wrenching romances! Took me about 70 pages to get fully into the book, but once the love story got started, I was hooked. Such a beautiful description of the human race and what makes us unique creatures in the universe (or so I think we are but who really knows!). This book isn't so much about alien invaders as it is about human relationships, love, determination, self sacrificing, and some discrimination aspects. Can't wait for the movie and the sequel to see how many humans are left in the rebel cells, if Jeb's colony will work together with the other rebels, how Wanda gets along with her new body, whether her and Ian and Mel and Jared will get married and live happily ever after, will the humans and good souls defeat the aliens and win back the planet or learn to coexist? Very interesting story...
Thank goodness I finished this book. I started it because ... well, to be honest, I'm not sure why I started it. I'd read the Twilight books, and my teenaged daughter had also read them and wanted to read The Host, so maybe I tackled it to see if it was suitable for her. This seems a little altruistic, but it's the only rationalisation I can come up with given that I wanted to scour out the inside of my skull by the time I'd finished Breaking Dawn.*
And I have to hand it to Stephenie Meyer - she's done a pretty good Rowling here, finding a formula and sticking with it. This book has an awful lot of parallels with Twilight - young innocent girl, older lover, potential love triangle, prurient disapproval of underage/premarital sex, sinister pure-evil baddies, curious ease of acceptance in the face of general weirdness, etc. etc.
I liked the concept of the souls as a conquering race, and I bought the sinister nature of their takeover of Earth. However, for all this is supposed to be Ms Meyer's attempt at adult fiction, it still reads like a YA novel. The internal dialogue between Wanda and Mel is an interesting device for about the first quarter of the book, but then I got a bit irritated by Wanda's weedy squeamishness and Mel's overbearing bossiness. And the book went on, and on, and on, and on...
Interesting plot twist at the end (although blatantly messianic), but all in all I wish I hadn't started the book, because having done so I felt compelled to finish it. Not the worst book I've ever read, but some way from being the best.
*I really did read the Twilight books to see if they were suitable for my daughter. All of them. Worst fortnight of my life.

The beginning is slow and hard to get into. After that I was hooked
Seems to do alot of repeating. Will read next one to see if it gets better.
this book definitely makes you think about the state of the world! and how aliens may look at it a lot differently than we do...i will admit there are some parts that get sappy and i'm not sure about the ending, but i did enjoy reading it and especially as it got past the halfway point i couldn't put it down!
This is the first and only Stephanie Myer book I have ever read and I was pleasantly surprised! I liked her writing and the storyline kept me intrigued. The character development was also great in my opinion. Made me consider picking up a twilight book…we shall see
I am a big fan of the Twilight series, but for some reason I put off reading this book. I wish I hadn't! As usual, I was completely engrossed in the story and the characters. I have never been a sci-fi reader so the whole alien invasion/ body snatcher thing was new to me and I loved it. Just like the Twilight books, it made me sad when the book ended and I had to leave the characters.
Is this a great piece of literature? No. But it's a great story. It probably could have been about 150 pages shorter because there was a lot of extra unimportant description, but I have come to expect that with her writing. I honestly thought the writing was somewhat better than the Twilight series too.
