Four stars because it was so INSANELY LONG. However, a good epic story with magic (I wish there was a bit more of this) and the majority of the heroes and important characters are women

DID NOT FINISH

---DNF w/ rating @ Chapter 47 out of 76---

Really really tried my hardest to get through this. The world-building in this book is amazing! It's set in a world full of magic, dragons, and mystery! Finishing chapters feels rewarding sometimes because you get to discover more about the different queendoms/kingdoms, and we also get to try to solve the bigger puzzles together with the main protagonists.

Which is why having to drop this book feels like a shame. I sosososo SOOO wanted to read this book because of how much people recommended it, especially since it had lesbians & dragons, but the writing of the author (god bless her; hope she's having a good day) often makes my head hurt and makes getting through all 800+ pages of this a struggle. I'd find myself absorbed into the book, and then a particular sentence or paragraph would be written unexpectedly strange that it would take me away from the story. It feels like the author wants to be unique so badly, but it's just...not working. The world-building is already elaborate enough and amazing, what's the harm in writing it "naturally"?

Am upset that I have to leave Ead and Sabran and Tane and Loth and everyone else, but I figured I had to DNF lest I gain wrinkles on my forehead from having my brows furrowed all the time

I often feel that books/shows/movies don’t give their characters enough time to develop, and i can safely say i did not feel that way with this book
only like the last 60 pages are the battle with the nameless one
there is a lot of build up which i found interesting and overall made me more immersed in the story.

it did probably take me a good 200 pages to truly understand who the  characters were and their relationship with each other due to just how much world building was happening, but i was ok with it
