Just time to record a couple of words. This is a tremendous piece of metafiction, with the author using the tale Victorian lovers to comment on our own values. The explicit use of a modern day narrator, who at one point appears to be in the tale itself, and the three possible endings given, all contribute to the overall themes of the novel. Magnificent and rewarding.
3.5 because while i did not enjoy it as much as the collector it was still excellent
One star is for the formal aspects of it, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It's a shame they come with such a boring story.

It's just so boring and dry and pretentious. There has to be a better metafictional book than this right ????
In honesty, combined with other commitments, this book took a long time to read. But when I was reading, I found it hard to put down: the story of a woman who has created her own misery and wallows in it, Sarah was a character I never really understood. But I actually loved the amount of analysis required on the reader's part throughout 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'. All of the characters were a bit detestable, which made it easier to analyse and also to enjoy the story itself without being emotionally caught up in the plight of pettish, boring Ernestina or the ridiculous Charles. Once I'd ploughed through the first ten pages or so the mock-Victorian style was charming. I loved the authorial input and the essay-like comparisons to modern themes and the end was a surprise - although I haven't yet decided whether that was a good thing. Overall, a really good read.
Not the worst book to write a 12 pages thesis on.
This was a quick read & Jeremy Irons was the narrator, so I definitely knew I would be engrossed.
I’ve never seen the movie based on the novel, but I always wanted to watch it because it was considered for many awards. But based on the book, I’m not so sure why it was considered award-worthy. To be honest, the novel seemed simple. So, I ‘googled’ the book and it helps explain why it was considered to be “notable”. Perhaps it was because it was the time period covered or publication?
Either way, I not sure if I agree but it could be just I’m too simple too. Good story nonetheless but not 5 stars for me.
