2,5 stars.

Impressively enough the author wrote this when she was only 17 years old. That blows my mind. This story was heartbreaking from beginning to end. And although I applaud the author for constructing this story and being able to suck me in, I feel like this would work better as a movie. Personally, I couldn’t get into the language and the overuse of dialogue. Overall, this story is amazingly constructed and well written. Just not what I enjoy in a book overall.

Make sure to check triggerwarnings before reading.

An emotional book with a female character struggling against a corrupted system. It had poetic moments where the emotions were meant to hit hard, but not to the point where it felt overly complicated and abstract.

I also enjoyed having a morally gray protagonist, a fresh breath from those overly positive books as it seemed that she was more realistic.

And the themes as well, black identity, the police system and having a female caretaker identity, were fantastically explored.

A minor gripe is the LGBTQ tag, it was barely there and I wouldn't consider it a theme of the book. Kinda superfluous.

Heavy read
Unique way of storytelling.
Some scenes I need to vomit.
