I am not quite sure what to think of this book. I was very excited to read it. At first, I was intrigued. The language drew me into the mind of Bruno. However, as the story developed there were two things I noticed. First, he reads much younger than he is in the book. The author sets him to be about 9. Yet, he feels like he is 6 or 7. Second, I kept moving in and out of the author's perspective. For much of the book, I felt it was being written from Bruno's perspective. Yet, it was actually supposed to be in third person. I am not quite sure why the third person read like a 6 year old boy as well. That was a bit confusing. I would have preferred if it was just written from Bruno's perspective outright. I did enjoy the simplicity of the writing. You don't get lost in long, flowery descriptions, which matches the theme of the book. However, this is a challenge at the end. I was no as emotionally drawn in as I thought I would be. Overall, this book did not quite meet my expectations.

Great story, but I'm not a fan of Boyne's writing style

What a book...what an ending. Beautifully crafted, and while I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, its power is undeniable.

A heart wrenching tale of a very unfortunate event. I loved the way it was written, how it captured everything about being a naive nine year old. Great read.

I had a really hard time with this book. First of all, the main character is 9 but his IQ seems to be that of a much, much younger child. I can't imagine a 9 year old being so utterly clueless about what is going on around them. I didn't find it cute or endearing at all that they were calling Auschwitz "out-with"-- it seemed to trivialize what really went on for me. I was really disappointed and frankly, I am really surprised that somebody made a movie of this book.

Heartbroken after this one. May have teared up a few times but especially at the end. I knew that's what was about to happen but I didn't want to believe it. Horrifying book and I'll ever understand how these types of things actually happened.
