I had a really hard time with this book. First of all, the main character is 9 but his IQ seems to be that of a much, much younger child. I can't imagine a 9 year old being so utterly clueless about what is going on around them. I didn't find it cute or endearing at all that they were calling Auschwitz "out-with"-- it seemed to trivialize what really went on for me. I was really disappointed and frankly, I am really surprised that somebody made a movie of this book.

Heartbroken after this one. May have teared up a few times but especially at the end. I knew that's what was about to happen but I didn't want to believe it. Horrifying book and I'll ever understand how these types of things actually happened.

I already knew the plot and yet I still (almost) hyperventilated from crying.
I've watched this film twice and during the entirety of the book I kept thinking to myself "I'm sure I won't cry, I mean, I already know exactly what's going to happen, right?".
And then I read the final chapter.
I've sent texts while crying and I've scared my mum by waking her up and saying (while crying) "it's over" and asking for a hug.
I thought no book could make me cry after We were liars, but guess I was wrong.
(We were liars made me cry harder, but god this was a tough one too.)

It's hard for me to accept the pure naiveté in the main character. I know he's young, but he's absolutely oblivious and it kills me.
No matter what, Bruno and Shmuel's story will resonate with everyone who reads it.

It was a good book, and I enjoyed it, but I don’t think I’ll want to re-read it. I didn’t feel too connected to the characters, but it’s more of a historical book so I think it’s fine.
