I wanted to like this. But I didn't get any of the small town vibes I was promised. Charlie and his sister are awful, awful people - like, stalking? Throwing rocks through windows? No. Just no.
Also, Brant's amazing overnight recovery from a concussion is just a little too unbelievable.

I thought this was such a fun read - spicier than I thought it would be in several parts, but I have enjoyed reading it the past few days. This feels like BN’s sweet spot - you can see how comfortable she is writing small town romance. I love the tag on the cover, “Small towns have long memories…”

Talulah has moved back to her hometown in Coyote Canyon (based on Bozeman, MT) after 14 years of leaving her high school boyfriend at the altar (and a couple others since then). She returns to take care of her aunt’s estate and funeral bc no one else in her family is available. She has decided she’s not good at commitment, because she often feels like she wants to please the other person and says yes, when she isn’t fully committed. She’s in a business relationship with a man in Seattle who wants them to create the perfect family, and she wants that, too, but also doesn’t. When she runs into her first fiancés best friend and sparks fly, she questions what she wants at all.

Love being in Brenda Novak’s bookclub. Her video with her daughter Alexa about this book is worth watching!

Coyote Canyon

Book 1: Talulah's Back in Town
Sometimes the past we leave behind leads us right where we belong.

Talulah Barclay doesn’t like complications. Unfortunately, they seem to love her. Fourteen years after leaving her fiancé at the altar, Talulah returns to her hometown of Coyote Canyon, Montana, to settle her great-aunt’s estate. As she’d feared, her “runaway bride” reputation is waiting right where she left it, and her ex’s best friend, Brant, isn’t about to let her slip by unnoticed.

Brant has always been a loyal friend, but Talulah’s decision to run isn’t the only thing he hasn’t forgotten. He remembers more about Talulah than he cares to admit. Vividly. And it’s increasingly difficult to ignore her now, especially when they find themselves in close quarters. Talulah has no plans to stay in town after she fixes up her aunt’s Victorian farmhouse, even if the unbridled sparks with Brant give her a good reason to linger. Besides, bailing on relationships is kind of her thing. But a lot has changed since Talulah last turned tail—maybe her heart has changed, too?

My Review of the book:
I enjoyed this small-town romance. I am looking forward to reading more in this series! I love connecting with the characters and returning again and again to their stories.
As with any good story, there are plenty of obstacles that have to be faced. I found this to be an entertaining story. I enjoyed the blossoming romance between Brant and Talulah and the discussions that they had about friendships, feelings, careers, and finances. It struck me as more “real” than you sometimes find in romance books. There are some explicit love scenes, but I did not find them to be too long or overpower the story.
