The Candymakers

Wendy Mass

4.2 AVERAGE

This is a heartwarming story about a candy contest that changes four children's lives forever. It comes in four perspectives and the characters actually seem real. You should definately read this!

Another derivative Willy Wonka book, but definitely unique in how the characters are presented. Each part is told from one of the children's point of views and you notice odd things about them, or wonder about them, but it is not until you switch characters that you notice what is different.

One of the very best books I have ever read. I loved it. It was beautiful.

The candy in this book sounds so delicious!

I was seriously doubting this story for the first few pages. Initially, I thought that the writing was weak but the story grabbed hold within the first chapter and from that point either the writing got better or the story took over so completely that it didn't matter. Possibly, both. The first section is probably the weakest of the five which is a shame because it sets the tone and some readers may not press past that to get to the meat of the story which unfolds in the next three sections. There were a few aspects of the story I didn't totally love but for the most part it worked. I can see this being a good book for people of many ages. Because I'm a sap I actually teared up at the end. Overall I was pleasantly surprised by this book and will look for other works by this author.

Charlie and the chocolate factory meets the next top baker kids edition. A really cute middle grade story.

I’m so glad I decided to re-read this beloved novel of mine! I had forgotten the abundant whimsy and craft that Wendy Mass weaves into her books, and I adored falling back into and being captured by her writing style again!

The Candymakers is full of clever twists and turns that keep the plot moving along at an exciting pace. It’s in a very unique format, with the same few days re-told 4 different times from four different characters, but I think it worked wonderfully for this novel! I had forgotten just how much each character hides from the others, and how seeing into their lives through each of their eyes made everything sweeter.

I really enjoyed the characters and the growth they make throughout this novel. It’s rare to see such flawed yet dynamic characters in middle grade books, and I appreciated that they each learned to trust themselves and the people around them. I can learn lessons from them, and I was rooting them on even if they made mistakes.

I had to suspend my disbelief while reading this novel, but I was so willing and easily able to do so because of the intrigue of the plot and voice. This was a purely fun, good-hearted read that filled my heart with nostalgia and reminded me of my love for Wendy Mass.

This is one of those books that keeps you effortlessly engaged the whole time and leaves you staring into space when you finish, trying to imagine what happens to the characters next, since you can't bear to leave them behind.

In other words, it's really, really good.

Such a good, easy, comforting reread ❤️.
