Loved it. Her frank discussion of anxiety, depression, and OCD hit very close to home for me, especially in seeing how her revelation reading a book about mental illness and feeling understood was mirrored in my own experience reading this book. And as one of the many fans for whom Matilda was an incredibly important book and movie, it was truly heartwarming to realize that the person charged with bringing her to life on screen was and is exactly the kind of person I'd imagined, with all the kindness, care, understanding, and brilliance that you could hope to find out someone you look up to possesses. A++, highly recommend to everyone, I would rate this six (or ten!) stars if I could to set it apart from my penchant for rating lots of books at 5 stars.
WOW!!! - I listened to this on audiobook, and Mara Wilson is so captivating, a lot of the time it feels as if she is talking personally to you. I went into this book because Mara starred in one of my favourite films of all time Matilda, and lends her voice to one of my favourite podcasts Welcome to Nightfall. But I didn't expect to have such a personal experience whilst reading.
And when I say personal, I mean never have I ever read a biography which I've felt such a kinship with. Despite the fact that I am not a child star, I found myself relating to Mara on ever single life experience. From being a child/teen/adult who worries about every single little thing, to being an awkward theatre kid in my teenage years, and currently living as a struggling artist.
For me this book was something that felt like I was reading (or rather listening to) at the perfect time in my life.
Highly recommend!!

I read this because it was a book club selection, otherwise I probably would not have picked it up on my own. While celebrity memoirs aren't my favorite genre, I did find myself relating to some of Mara's experiences in unexpected ways. I also thought it was fascinating to learn about how she coped with discovering herself as an adult after such a successful and painful childhood. I think we all have had moments in our adolescence that we look back at with embarrassment, but Mara took those experiences and turned them into a strength by being vulnerable and courageous enough to share those experiences with others.
I only give this two stars, but I think other readers will rank this higher if this genre is what they're into.

Mara Wilson can definitely call herself a "storyteller." This book put a voice to her of course but also impacted me as a woman, someone with depression/anxiety, and addressed the concept of "fitting in." It's also pretty hilarious. Definitely would recommend, although it gets a little redundant towards the end. Worth the read fo sho.
