Tears of Tess

Because of this, I could barely do my work. This book consumed me. Period.

The book is written in quite a captivating style and you can easily read it in one go. However the main character can be very annoying with here "should I, shouldn't I" thoughts and Q is as torn as Edward in twilight, about his fetish. Come on BDSM isn't such a thing anymore in the 21st century.
In addition the book suffers from the problem that the whole story would be finished in the middle if someone would just explain to Tess who Q actually is. I actually enjoyed the book but wouldn't really call it a good story.

The one word that comes to mind is phenomenal. This book is not for those of you who want some fluffy romance novel, nor for those who have triggers that you need to avoid. This book was dark, hot, and tough to get through at times, but was completely and totally worth it. It isn't the first book I have read that was about sex slaves and the like, but it is by far the best.

Tess Snow is our main character, and she is strong. When on a romantic getaway with her boyfriend, she is captured by slavers. She is dehumanized, beaten, and goes through many other horrific experiences before she meets her new master. Living with Q (her master), she learns more about herself, and begins to fall in love with Q. I think this would be defined as Stockholm Syndrome, but after finishing the book, I do not think I could classify it as such.I enjoyed being in her mind and feeling her confusion about Q and what he is doing, what he wants from Tess

Throughout the book, I found myself rooting for the couple (I guess we could call them that?), but then questioning myself as to why in the hell I was rooting for them to get together. This book was dark, and the author did an absolutely fabulous job of crafting this story.

Overall, I give this book all of the stars (yes all of them). The plot was addicting and well written. This book took me on a thrilling journey from beginning to end. With a brilliant set of characters and just enough dark twists and turns to keep me on the edge of my seat, I would happily recommend this to anyone interested!

So I was entirely unprepared for how much I was going to love this book.
The writing is fantastic. It’s my first Pepper Winters and I am super impressed. I felt like I just wanted to highlight the entire book. So many really good lines!

I found myself getting frustrated with our MCs throughout the book but by the end everything they did or said made sense!
Some of the things Tess did and the way she kept going back and forth with her feelings irritated me, but as soon as I tried to really put myself in her shoes I completely understood her. This girl goes through a lot and she’s understandably conflicted about some of her feelings.

And Q!!! I love Q! In the first half of the book I really didn’t know if the author could make me love him but she seriously succeeded! He’s one of my new favorite book men! (And I won’t even lie, not usually a big fan of Frenchmen)

This one is a bit dark, our heroine is kidnapped, trafficked, sold, and all you would expect would come with that, so prepare yourself if you’re going to read this but man did I love this one.

3.5/5 stars

Tears of Tess is emotional, captivating, and twisted. The novel drew me in right from the very beginning with the Prologue and kept me interested throughout Tess's journey. The story begins with Tess and her boyfriend of two years, Brax, going on a much-needed vacation to Mexico. They decide to go exploring and wind up in some skuzzy cafe, where Brax gets beaten to a pulp and Tess gets kidnapped. The story continues with Tess under the possession of traffickers of women, where she is ultimately sold to a powerful man named Q. From there, things go kind of twisted -- for the story, as well as Tess's mind.

Tess is a character who has held in her deepest desires and urges her entire life. She wants more passion and in a way that scares her boyfriend and even scares her a bit. Her boyfriend doesn't want any part of her dark fantasies, so if she stays with him then she is destined to a life of unsatisfactory sex. But, then she is taken on as a love slave and thinks that karma is kicking her ass for ever thinking those thoughts...until she begins to realize that she likes it.

I thought the novel was well-done and I was impressed with it overall, as a book. However, the storyline didn't really do it for me. I enjoyed the beginning, where it was thriller-like and suspenseful. But, once Tess's mind starts going twisted and she goes back and forth from one extreme to the next in her thoughts, I just couldn't really relate to her choices/thoughts. I even had to put the book down at one point -- not because I wasn't enjoying it, but because I was just so pissed off with Tess that I needed a break!

It really bothers me how Tess becomes attached to her "master". I understand that sometimes this happens to people who are held captive; they form attachments with their captors. But, this is different than that and I just didn't find it all that realistic. And I don't care about what Q (her master) typically does with these women, whether he usually treats them good or not. He still did not treat Tess good. Remember when you first came to live with him, Tess? He did not treat you well. He did not treat you like a human! I don't care if she got aroused by it or not, it still wasn't right. I mean, I understand that people like to do those kinky things in the bedroom, but it wasn't like they were two consenting adults just mixing things up. He was actually treating her as a sex slave and she was scared shitless! I could rant on this one little topic all day long...

I have very mixed feelings on this book and am having trouble trying to portray exactly what I thought of it. While I hated certain parts of the storyline and just didn't get it, I thought the novel as a whole was very good. Does that make sense? I hope so.

I also thought that certain aspects of the story reminded me of Beauty and the Beast a bit. Mostly around when Tess moves in with Q.

Tess is an unmitigated idiot. That said, the character development and story have so many inconsistencies that it's impossible for me to take the story seriously. The (anti-)hero is all over the place, the heroine can't decide what the hell she's doing or what the hell she wants in either of her 'relationships' and if I never hear the name Brax again, it will be too soon.

This is far more angsty than dark and I'm over female characters who can't own their shit. FOH. A full 1/3 of the book is her wringing her hands. Shut up already and get on with it.

The obsession with characters being 'good people' is also annoying AF. Your series is Monsters in the Dark? Well show me some real damn monsters or shut it.

Definitely on the dark side of dark romance. The spicy scenes were well written if you can put aside the weird plot and heroines constant flip flopping. I don’t know if I would say I enjoyed the book, but I did finish it and will probably read the rest of the series to know what happens to everyone.

Also, they act like Q is a huge mystery but anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows he’s a dom with daddy issues who saves sex slaves.

The bird symbolism was nice though.

OMG I can’t express how much I loved this book. At first I thought it took a long time to really get exiting. I really didn’t like Brax and I was annoyed with how much she thought about him. When she got kidnapped and was brought home to Q I couldn’t put the book down. It was so exiting. I love Tess and Qs relationship and how messed up they both are. This book is a little disturbing at times but I love the dark and twisted so this was really a good book for me. I can’t express how much I loved this book, so amazing.

I started reading this book after watching a TikTok video by raquel.reads (thank you girl for the rec). I'm used to dark books, so I was relatively prepared, but still... this book was shocking. I definitely need a cold shower and a therapy session, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! If you love dark books, and I mean dark books (check TWs before reading) then you will love Tears of Tess.
