I did not realize that this was a three-book series when I picked it up. I also had no idea it was about vampires. A ragtag group of vampire hunters, consisting of two CDC doctors, a Holocaust survivor, and an exterminator, band together to stop the spread of a vampire-creating virus before it wipes out the whole world. This definitely reminded me of The Passage by Justin Cronin, though The Strain came out first. I think The Passage is the better written book, though this one is fast moving and a quick read. To finish the series or not is my next decision...
Like I had this big review in my head, that, in short, said this book was dumb but addictive. There's a mexican gangster character who mentally says "madre" and "cholos" in italics to remind the reader that he is, in fact, mexican. Just in case you forgot.

I liked the story but the writing had me rolling my eyes more than once. Looking forward to what they do with the TV series. Bald guy from season one House Of Cards is the main doctor and Walder Frey is Setrakian.
Honestly, it was just alright. Guillermo del Toro is one of my favorite directors and I love his brilliance of magical realism in films, but that brilliance was lacking in this book. It was written more like a screenplay than a novel, with multiple smaller arcs from various perspectives that contribute to the larger arc. Even then, I miss the richness and the visual opulence, and the opportunity to construct a magnificent story was wasted.
I was 17 when I asked my dad if he could please get this book for me on the day it was released... And he did and it only took me 9 years to finish.
This book was billed as CSI meets monster horror. So. How could I resist?! And it was everything I exactly expected. The monster build was great, a good balance of tried and true vampire legends with a scientific rebranding that makes it somewhat believable. Sure, the book has some tropes, but what doesn’t? I liked the character build, the story follows several different people from several different roles/life perspectives but doesn’t loose track of any and has some decent twists. Nothing too spectacular. General recommend this book, it’s not gonna change your life or anything, but it’s super entertaining!!!
I loved it. I’m scared to read the other two in the series because I’m not sure they’ll be as good. Excellent combination of science horror and supernatural horror.
Okay, I actually only got 75% through this book, but I give up. If you like cheesy B-movie horror, this may be perfect for you, but it’s not for me. It actually started pretty strong with an intriguing mystery and interesting — if not entirely original — take on vampires. But it quickly devolved into schlock and cliches. Definitely a hard pass from me.
