I liked the exterminator and the old man but the supporting cast were not very interesting.
The story dragged even though the book is quite short.
I guess it is an interesting take on vampires but not interesting in a good way, just in a different way.
There were also a number of situations and decisions in the book made by the characters which just didnt make sense. Too many times I remembered that someone wrote this, I wasnt absorbed into the world.
I would not recommend this book.

Solidly in the "horror" column of the vampire genre, The Strain goes back to the root of vampire mythology as a scourge to be wiped from the face of the earth, but which may win the war against humanity in a fiendishly viral explosion. It is a book that could just as easily be described as a biological apocalypse that would leave the CDC chilled to the bone.
In an age when the world is truly a global community with no refuge, the horror of The Strain is palpable.

The first half of this book was pretty gripping and kept me interested in what was going to happen next and how everything was going to pan out. I liked the idea that vampires are something to be feared, not loved, and yeah -- these guys are scary. I felt that the second half got a little repetitive, and I was turned off by the idea that maybe there are more ... "organized" vampires as was implied toward the end?
After completing the book, I'm left with more than a few unanswered questions -- to be expected with the first book in a trilogy -- but I don't care enough to learn the answers. (Sorry, honey!) I think I like my "undead" creatures to be more mindless and less "secret society".

I was really keen to read this one, but it turned out to be an airport read. Little substance, cardboard cutouts for characters (especially the women), but at least the second half read quick (I was skimming by the end). Only giving a star for the unique design of the vampires, but I'll probably not bother with the rest of the series. It's clear that from the way it's written, it was written with a possible movie adaptation in mind. Not always the best way to write a book, but some exceptions do manage to pull it off. Hopefully the tv show is a little better.

About: A Boeing lands, dark and silent. All the people inside are still, as if asleep. Dead, their bodies drained of blood. All except four, it seems. But those four survivors are not likely to tell any tales, for they are dead men walking themselves. Whatever killed all those passengers – is eating them up too.
It spreads like a virus. The disease takes over, mutates the body in a matter of days, chucking anything unnecessary. The smallest drop of their blood can turn you, and then you too will hear His voice, and you too will haunt your loved ones in search for easy prey, easy blood, nourishment.
Mine: Remember how Dracula entered England? He steered a ship into a port on a stormy night, with all crew gone but for a corpse or two. All while he himself hid in a crate full of soil. And then disappeared, with the said boxes of dirt. This is a very classic scary monster vampire story. Authors here too did their best to dissuade the reader from wanting to become one of these foul beasts who feed and urinate at the same time, whose very genitals fall off, and body mutates into grotesque horror meant only for feeding. And yet there are still those, in the story, who want this for sheer fact that there’s a certain mental capacity, a form of life, immortality. That’s the good side of this tale. For the rest of it was already told, many times over, with the same brave but annoying characters.
I watched the series, didn’t finish, and am not planning to, but first season and first book seem to be fairly on the same level. So if you didn’t like the series, don’t bother with the book. I can give it a 3 out of 5, no more.
