Wat een heerlijk spannend boek! Ik had hem gisteren al uit kunnen lezen als ik wat meer tijd had gehad om te lezen. :P Maar ik had gisteren maar een uurtje, die dag ervoor ook maar iets van een uurtje, dus ja, dan duurt het even om te lezen. :P
Ik lees niet vaak dit soort boeken, thrillers/psychologische thriller, maar ik ben superblij dat ik dit boek heb meegenomen uit de bibliotheek. Helaas hebben ze niet de andere delen dus hopelijk komen die er nog zodra de vertaling uit is.
Het boek begint toen alles in Gwen/Ginas leven helemaal overhoop werd gehaald. Ze heeft net haar kinderen opgehaald en ze is bijna thuis als er allemaal commotie is om haar huis. Een auto is in haar huis gereden, maar dat is nog niet waar de commotie echt voor is. Want er is iets gevonden in de garage. Iets gruwelijks. Iets wat Gina/Gwen niet had verwacht. Haar man... is een moordenaar. Een seriemoordenaar. Ze wordt meteen opgepakt voor de ogen van haar kinderen zonder enige gedachte over de gevoelens van de vrouw of de kinderen. Ik vond dit echt zwaar overdreven.
En daarna switchen we naar een paar jaar later. Gwen/Gina probeert te leven. Te overleven is misschien het betere woord. Want ik kan je zeggen, na ik het hele boek heb gelezen, dat Gwen/Gina geen leven heeft. Ze is constant op haar hoede, is getraint tot de max, paranoia heerst, ik vroeg me af hoe lang ze nog zou volhouden voordat ze in elkaar zal storten. Ik vond het enorm moedig van haar dat ze ondanks alles toch doorging, voor haar kinderen in ieder geval. Ze doet alles voor hen. Ze probeert een nieuw leven op te starten maar is ook al plannen aan het maken om te vluchten. Want, zo vinden we uit, er zijn stalkers overal. Mensen die haar, of haar en de kinderen, dood willen hebben.
En we zien hoe de kinderen gebukt gaan onder al dit. Allebei pubers (de een 11 de ander 14) en je kunt voorstellen dat deze kinderen al heel wat hebben gezien en dat ze gewoon vrij willen zijn. Gewoon vrienden willen maken. Gewoon op internet kunnen gaan. Niet bang hoeven te zijn dat iemand ze kwaad doet. Door het boek, en met alles wat er gaat gebeuren/gebeurde, zien we hoe moeilijk de kinderen het hebben en dat ze er, net als hun moeder, helemaal onder door gaan. Arme kinderen.
Ik vond het echt enorme bullshit hoe iedereen Gina/Gwen behandelde. Zelfs toen haar onschuld was bewezen werd ze door veel mensen gezien als een hulpje of als een slechterik. Ook later als er dingen gebeuren om haar heen gaan mensen meteen er maar van uit dat zij het allemaal doet. En ik had gewoon zin om mensen te slaan. Sorry hoor, maar dat haar man nou een griezelige gast is die heel goed is in keeping up with appearances betekent niet dat zij slecht is. Zoals de politie haar behandelde? En het was gewoon heftig om te zien hoeveel troep zij over zich heen krijgt op het internet, hoe mensen zelfs na jaren nog steeds aan het jagen zijn op haar. Nog steeds naar haar zoeken. Nog steeds haar dood willen hebben voor iets dat zij niet eens wist.
Je vraagt je af hoe natuurlijk, en dat deed ik ook in dit boek. Maar ik kan me ook heel goed voorstellen dat de man gewoon een goede toneelspeler is, zoals ik al zei, goed met keeping up with appearances. Soms heb je het gewoon niet door. Soms zie je het gewoon echt niet. Er zijn natuurlijk hints, maar tja, ik kan me voorstellen dat je die niet zo een twee drie als iets zorgelijks ziet. Daarom vond ik haar antwoord op een gegeven moment geweldig. Ze las iemand duidelijk een les dat ze ook niks had kunnen horen omdat haar man, zodra hij de meisjes had ontvoerd, bij ze de stembanden doorsneed. Jep. Ze kunnen dus niet eens meer gillen. Of praten. Of iets van geluid maken.
Dus ik, ik was vreselijk gefrustreerd met hoe iedereen Gwen behandelde. Ik had graag gezien dat mensen wat vriendelijker waren. Wat meer begrip toonden. Dat ze de echte Gwen/Gina zien. Een lieve vrouw die gewoon een fout heeft gemaakt toen ze jonger was. De fout dat ze voor iemand viel die uiteindelijk een pscyhopaat was.
Er zijn bergen en bergen twists en turns en het hield het boek superspannend. Gaat Gwen/Gina weer vluchten? Hoe kan haar man al die dingen doen ondanks dat hij in de dodencel zit? Wie is de moordenaar die nu het kleine dorpje plaagt en waarom kopieert hij hoe Melvin meisjes vermoordt? Wat is er met Sam, wat is zijn geschiedenis? Af en toe zat ik met open mond te lezen want ik verwachtte niet een twist of turn die naar me toe werd gegooid.
Het einde, HOLY WOW. Dat was echt superspannend en ik moest ook op punten huilen. Ik was aan het juichen voor Gwen/Gina, hup hup meid, je kunt het! We komen achter een berg dingen en dan eindigt het boek op een manier, wauw, ik moet gewoon de volgende boeken hebben. Ik moet weten hoe dit verder gaat. Hoe zal dit eindigen?
Wel, ik kan waarschijnlijk nog wel een tijdje doorpraten/schrijven over dit boek, maar ik denk dat ik het maar hier bij hou en eindig met dat ik het boek aan iedereen zal aanraden als je een spannend boek wilt hebben met lekker veel twists en turns. Vertrouw niemand!

I am on a roll with good thrillers lately! Loved this book!
I did have to suspend my belief ever so slightly. I guess I am 'victim blaming' like everyone else in Gina's world, but I don't understand how you are okay with your husband locking you out of a room in your house that you share. Yeah, yeah, it was his little special man cave, but really, you're not allowed in there and you think thats normal?

SYNOPSIS
Gina Royal, now Gwen Proctor, has spent four years hiding out from legions of dedicated haters after her husband Melvin's crimes were brought to life. She finally feels at home in Stillhouse Lake, but is it too good to be true?
MY OPINION
Quick facts: 1) I've had this book on my TBR for a hot min. 2) Woman finds out she's married to a serial killer is one of my fave tropes. 3) I am aware that Rachel Caine has since passed due a rare type of cancer, and I apologize if my salty reviews seems heartless and in bad taste. My sympathies go out to Rachel's family, friends, and loved ones. My review is strictly about this book, and is not a commentary on Rachel as a person.
I went into this book knowing that it would be a popcorn thriller and that yeetage of disbelief is required. However, the yeetage requirements were simply too high. At first, the pace was pacing and I appreciated that the author didn't dilly-dally with turgid prose. The family dynamics and Gwen's mental state are set up quickly and clearly. But then... it all crumbled like feta cheese. So why didn't I DNF? In short, I was past the point of no return when I realized that nothing – not even a cosign by Beyonce – could save this book from 1-star territory.
My first issue: it was relentlessly repetitive. I thought nobody could repeat themselves like Liv is Stay Awake, but Gwen said hold my mfn conceal and carry permit! She doesn't miss a chance to tell us how her life has been changed because of Melvin, how Melvin was just putting on an act, and how her kids couldn't lead normal lives because of Melvin's atrocities. WE GET IT!!!! You don't need to spell it out to us. Nobody expects your life to be regular degular when your husband was running a chop shop out of his garage. Not every interaction needs to be compared and contrasted with your Ted Bundy ass ex. Let's move on.
Then around 40% ish we get a download of their summer akin to your grandma emailing you about her exciting week of Bridge and bird watching. The whole "someone used your ex-husband's disposal method to dump a girl that was also very much your ex-husband's type" event is forgotten for a solid 50+ pages. You'd think as the world's most paranoid woman, this whole ting would set you on edge. Perhaps you'd like to find out who tf did this? But no, instead we get to read about Gwen & Sam's HGTV summer reno special that culminates in a sweaty ass kiss. Cool cool cool...
But the source of my dismay with this book is Gwen. Logic? Never heard of that. She had three diff alarm codes for her and her kids but didn't have a security camera??? You can't be dead ass? WHY ARE SECURITY CAMERAS ALWAYS LEFT OUT???? Well she finally did, when she decided to let random cabin man/resident handyman Sam watch her kids for 12 hours while she travels states to spit on a plastic partition separating herself and Melvin. Great use of your time.
Next, Gwen decides to spill the beans to Sam about who she is. Yes, you read that right. The woman who has underground railroad-ed her kids around for four years in fear of being sussed out by an unrealistic number of internet trolls decides to sing like a canary to a man she's known as long as a fart in the wind. At this point, I chucked the book at my unsuspecting husband in anger.
Literal Darwinism behaviour. You're out here paying for fraudulent IDs with Bitcoin and teaching yourself SWAT breach patterns but yet you fess up to some solivagent who's allegedly writing a book???? FOR WHAT?????? But what did I expect from a lady who eats someone's homecooked meal and then randomly asks "who iz you?" and when he goes "well who iz YOU??" she replies "that's none of your business." ????? WHAT???
Anyways. Everything unfolded in true Scooby Doo quality, but at that point I was just happy to be done. This book was trashola. Another popcorn thriller that goes for too much while failing to manage the basics (how did Gwen pay taxes? Doesn't an online business seem counterintuitive to staying under the radar? What kind of budgeting app did Gwen use to only spend 100k in 4 years?). I can't believe there's six books in this series. Well, actually, the way Gwen behaves so mindlessly and irrationally, I guess she does need six books to figure out how to walk and chew gum at the same time. Too harsh? No worries, I punched my one-way ticket to hell years ago.

Damn. So good up-until the Absalom scene. As if you’d let somebody like that help you after such a traumatic event, with them making it even worse, if ever possible. DNF

guessed part of the ending and there were some parts that had pacing issues but still going to give this a high rating bc i FLEW through it and i’m running to the library to pick up the next in the series

Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine is the first book in the Stillhouse Lake series. Gina Royal arrives home with her two kids to find the police in her home. The police discovered a body hanging in her husband’s workshop after a car accidentally ran into it. Gina’s husband, Melvin is a serial killer and Gina had no clue. Gina has changed her name to Gwen Proctor and moved her kids to Norton, Tennessee. They have a home on Stillhouse Lake and Gwen is hoping to get their lives back on track. They have had a rough time with stalkers and internet trolls who do not believe in Gina’s innocence. One morning a jogger finds a body in the lake and it was disposed of in the same manner as Melvin’s other victims. Then she receives a threatening letter from Melvin. Gwen, Lanny, and Connor are plunged into another nightmare and it is up to Gwen to save them from a deadly killer.
