Loved it

Absolutely loved this book and the characters. Another great story with romance, steam, fluff, family, action and healing old hurts. Definitely going to get the next one.

***Audiobook Review***

I originally read this book because I wanted to continue with the series and didn’t want to miss something for a future book. I was in this series for the Ford brothers. I didn’t leave a review and the only thing I can remember is it wasn’t my favorite. I didn’t remember anything else…at all.

Like book 1, this book focuses more on the relationship than any suspense/crime story although that part of the story is woven into Quick and Cayson’s relationship building.

I like Quick and Cayson together. I still don’t understand the drama around the ex. Why the flip? What made him change his mind and go crazy?

As with most of her books, you have to overlook the repeated name brand dropping. Also, in this book, for some reason, the repeated stereotypes and characterizations of gender bothered me. I didn’t mark them down since I was listening, but I took the note down for my review so something about it stood out.

The audio performance is as good as all the rest with Mr. Snow. He’s perfect for these characters and this series.

This book contains many of the same characters as the first book, but focuses on a different relationship. The author seems to be definitely of the viewpoint that a person is most "manly" when waving a gun around and physically fighting, so be advised, if that's not your thing.

Promises Part 2 by A.E. Via

Oh my gosh how I am in love with these characters. Dr. Cayson stole my freaking heart. I can’t with how much I wanted him with the right man. Quick was that right man I love how he fought for him and wasn’t afraid to show the world that Cay was his.

Dr. Joe my god did I want to hurt that man for all he did in this book, I mean seriously if there ever was a villain he was sure it!!

Did I say I loved Cay, because I totally do. I hope we see him in the next books just like we saw Duke and Vaughan in this one. <3

The narration oh la la, I am a fan of Aiden as it is but hot damn if MM isn’t even better I swear to GAWD!

The continuation of [b:Promises Part 1|27157568|Promises Part 1 (Bounty Hunters, #1)|A.E. Via|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1444695386s/27157568.jpg|47196717] tells the story of Quick (a.k.a. Roman) who is Vaughn's father and Cayson the surgeon who preformed both Vaughn's and Duke's kindey surgeries.

Things start out rocky between the two MC's when Quick is a huge jerk to Cayson when the man shows up at his house to look in on Vaughn and Duke. Quick is attracted to the doctor but has been suppressing his feelings for men for a long time and is having a hard time allowing himself to be with Cayson.

Cayson has issues of his own with a "friend with benefit" who won't have sex with him because he is so deeply in the closet that he can't admit to himself that he is gay. Cayson accepts this sad arrangement as he feels no one else will want him especially Quick.

I won't go into detail of how these two get their acts together and try to make something work, it's obvious they will. I liked this story, not as much as the first one and it's because it felt a little clunky to me. The characters couldn't make up their mind how they wanted to behave from one second to the next, I'm mad at you, no I'm not.. now let's have sex. I felt that the relationship was a little rushed and the "bad" guy in ex Dr. Joe seemed to escalate much quicker than his character seemed to be upon first meeting.

I did enjoy seeing Duke and Vaughn and the brothers that were hired to help at work. I am hoping we get to see their stories especially Brian. His introduction and teasers have me intrigued.

READ: Jan 2023
FORMAT: Audio

BRIEF SUMMARY:
In part two of this contemporary action/romance series set in Atlanta, Quick has watched Duke and Vaughn’s relationship grow, and now it’s his turn. Cayson, the nephrologist whom Quick credits for saving his partner and son’s lives, is stirring up old feelings and desires in Quick that he’d never expected to feel again. They need to fight past a lifetime of disappointing relationships and failures to connect in order to find their happiness together.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: 3.5 / 5⭐
I see that the name of the game in this “Bounty Hunters” series is, “Let’s see how fast we can fall in love!” if these first two books are setting the trend. This one was doing an excellent job at pacing the relationship better throughout the first half of the book. Towards the end, I had to pause to reflect on how few days had passed between “we’re dating now!” and “we’re goddamn engaged to be married now!”

TECHNICAL / PRODUCTION: 2.5 / 5⭐
I’m a little bit confused by Quick’s age. I can’t recall a number being stated outright in either book yet, but in part one, Vaughn was aged at 31 years old, and a couple times in part two Quick is noted as ‘in his early forties.’ So, assuming that Quick is at most 44 years old, he would have conceived Vaughn when he was 12-13 years old? Which I know is not impossible, but would it not be highly noteworthy? In Via’s “A True Lover’s Story” series, it was a whole thing that Mike was young when he had Bishop; Quick would have been even younger than Mike was. I just find it odd that it wouldn’t be brought up at any point.

We get some “Nothing Special” crossover action in this book that a) is completely unnecessary seeing as how the Narcotics department has zero jurisdiction over what happens in this book; and b) paints Day in an extremely unflattering light, making him out to be more of an obnoxious bully than the lovable scamp that everyone can’t help but adore – where did this portrayal come from?

Via tends to lean into some rather misogynistic language to make her manly men extra manly. It’s normally only a phrase or two here and there that make my skin prickle, but in this book, it’s much more unapologetic than usual. Quick goes especially hard at emasculating a character by feminizing them, and never lets up. We can have strong men this day and age without being toxic about it, can’t we?

And can we talk about how many m/m romance books have been written where there’s a conversation about how “plenty of gay men aren’t into penetration,” but in this book, it’s used as our first clue that a character is a villain? Really?

Also, we sure do forget about Quick having a couple of fractured ribs real fast. Actions that he definitely should be having trouble with aren’t a hassle at all, once that whole excuse to get Cayson to visit him is used up.

FINAL THOUGHTS - OVERALL: 3 / 5⭐
It’s fine. I know I’m really ripping into Via in this review, but I’m probably still going to read the rest of the “Bounty Hunters” series at some point anyway. If you like Via’s works, this one won’t offend you. I’ll personally be taking a break from her for a little while, though.

This book has representation for gay and bi sexualities. There is little-to-no diversity, otherwise.

The following elaborates on my content warnings. These may be interpreted as spoilers, but I do not go into deep detail.
This book contains: gun violence (graphic, fatal); violence (fighting, threatening); alcohol use; misogynistic/sexist language used to bully someone; internalized homophobia; panic attacks (hyperventilating, fainting, anxiety); stalking behaviour; narcissistic behaviour; attempted murder; mentions of past cancer leading to death of a parent; and, unwanted advances leading to a near-sexual-assault.

I really enjoyed this story. It pulled me in from beginning to end as we get to figure out what happens with Quick and Dr. Chauncey. They have an immediate and strong chemistry and connection to each other but Quick does not react the best at first. Now he is ready to take a chance and see if he can have something with Chauncey. Chauncey is tired of love interests treating him like he isn't worth much of anything at all and as he is going to stop his "friends with benefits" arrange with Dr. Joe, Quick comes into the picture and starts showing with his actions that he means it and will treat him well. Dr. Joe does not handle being dumped well at all and can't seem to take no for an answer. I really enjoyed the way that Quick went about trying to build a good foundation and trust for his relationship with Chauncey. They might be very different from each other but they really compliment each other well. I loved getting the little tease of our next couple as well.
The narrator did a phenomenal job with the characters and really bringing the story to life. The characters are distinct from each other.
