I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the series!!

I have so many conflicting opinions about this book. I don't like the main character, Harley. She has a negative attitude toward people and comes across as rude, and is justified for being rude. I don't like many of the other characters, as they tend to fall flat, relying on racial stereotypes to make them feel real.

The writing itself is meh. There are too many info dumps, expositions, and random rants about the rich that have no place in the story. I also don't normally mind first person narrative, but the way this was written gave us info that Harley should not have had. She should not be able to guess what people are thinking, as opposed to feeling.

All that said, I DO like the world that was built, I'm interested in the magic system, I'm interested to see what happens next. I shall continue the series, but I'm going to continue to be critical about it.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s a light-hearted read. Harley has an innocence about her I couldn’t quite grasp - even though she’s prickly around the edges. At 19 yrs old - a couple of times there was a bit of a misalignment in the storyline - a bit of immaturity. This slight lag can be forgiven though with the overall uniqueness to the magic community. Yes - I could draw similarities to other books but the crux of the story, I feel, is unique. Will definitely check out book 2.

Maybe more like 2.5. Weak but shows lots of promise. I'm interested to see how the next one is
Diverse cast of characters: No

The first two chapters I was 'so over' this trope. Then I got sucked into the story and enjoyed it. The author uses the phrase "a smile slit his face" WAY too often. Annoyingly often. But the story was good. I'll check out the next book in the series.

Some of the negative reviews made me hesitate to really dig into this, but I'm glad I did! What a fun read! I love Harley's personality and look forward to reading about her journey. On to Book 2!

My main complaints: if you are writing above middle grade/beginning high school level, said is very much not dead & laugh and/or giggle is way less grating than a million “chuckles.” I probably wouldn’t have noticed this via any other form besides audio but having extra pain means I’m using audio only right now & really, I’ve never been so annoyed by adjectives besides said or exclaimed or asked being overused as I was with this otherwise lovely story to get lost in when life is being dumb.

Nice fantasy book that was clean and not too dark. I love Harry Potter and this one had similarities. It was great to read another Harry Potter-like series, at the same time maybe not entirely original. Good plot throughout. Will continue the series!
