I read this book to my 9 year-old daughter (and her brothers before her) as part of our history curriculum. It gives an excellent feel for the time in the life of an ordinary family living in the North during the Civil War with all the conflicts and tensions of a country and families in turmoil. At the end of each section for reading each day, my daughter would ask for more. It's not action-packed, but it is interesting and a great way to learn about the Civil War Era.

This book talks about many of the battles of the civil war though the eyes of newspaper reports, and letters. It also shows how families got ripped apart during this time in our history .

I felt like I was reading a middle grade history textbook watered down with a "story" to make it palatable. Not my favorite by far. But then, I'd rather read about real history than historical fiction, so perhaps I'm not the best judge.

This was a descent historical fiction read that covered the years of the civil war. I didn’t like how the author changed the spelling of dialog to fit an atrocious uneducated accent, and that was my main peeve. The family dynamic was the best since it highlighted the hard issue of families fighting on opposite sides of the war. Some of the war details felt like info dumps and flew over my kids’ heads. Overall we all enjoyed the story okay, but it wasn’t a favorite.
