This wasn't good or bad in my opinion. It was the sort of non fiction that essentially just tells you things it gets from other sources without breaking new ground or giving you original content. I had hear of 99% of these "stories". Not sure if you would call them myths legends stories retellings or eye witness statements. Who knows.

Started a lot better than it finished the first third was witty and made me smile a few times but then it just get dreary. Simply stating folklore/legend that could be found in any other anthology or hell even a quick google of "true spooky stories"

The very very few illustrations that were in her were just simple black and white printings, nice but nothing wonderful. I feel the whole thing would have been better served by putting pictures of the places it talked about in instead.

I recieved this as an ebook from netgalley. This in no way effected my review or opinion.

This was the perfect book for Halloween. While I’ve never listened to the podcast, I can understand why it became so popular. This is a fantastic collection of folklore, urban legends, and analysis.

The author goes into incredible detail and covers everything from vampires and haunted houses, to creepy dolls and the Mothman. He did his research and explores these strange, haunting myths with amazing prose. I could barely put it down!

While most of these legends were familiar to me on a base level (I’m a huge fan of the paranormal), seeing them explored in exciting new ways completely enthralled me. I learned so many amazing things from so many amazing cultures, and I will absolutely pick up the next books so I can learn more!

A must have for lovers of the paranormal, folklore and culture, and urban legends.

NOTE: This book is created from the podcast Lore narrated by Aaron Mahnke. The chapters in this book corresponds to episodes in the podcast and the wording is almost identical. The major difference is that these chapters are organized by topic. There are a few illustrations, but no more than 8.

With that out of the way, let's dive into the book.

There's a reason the podcast has been such a success. It's well written, well performed and has an interesting subject matter. It covers everything from vampires, to ghosts, to possessed dolls (I'm referring to you Robert!). Even without Mahnke's narration, the book is enjoyable. How could it not be? The wording is the same as the podcast. The biggest difference is that the book reorganizes the episodes and streamlines them by topic. Some stories are hard to swallow (yes, referring to the vampires and consumption chapter), but they're still interesting.

The way I see it, you have 2 options. Listen to the podcast or read this book. In my opinion, there's no real reason to do either. They're the same. Personally, I enjoy the music and Aaron's narration for the podcast. But with a book, you can read it much faster and everything is presented in a more streamlined order. It's really a matter of which you prefer: book or podcast.

Now what about the TV show? I'd recommend watching it in addition to either the book or the podcast. Even though the stories are covered in the book/podcast seeing it portrayed by actors makes them even more gruesome. But heads up, the first two episodes (vampires and the brain surgeon) are visually hard to watch.

Love the section on Werewolves. Read a few of these sections multiple times. Really enjoyable presentation.
