While this is essentially like every other Cinderella story just with a little more "courting" if you can call it that, it was a fairly easy and quick read but not my favorite. I suppose I was swayed by the Netflix depiction of Benedict going into this but he made me angry frequently. He may be a savior on a few occasions but he was also rather troublesome. I do adore Lady Violet Bridgerton though. Through every story both novel and tv show she is a delight

The first of the bridgerton books I’ve read with no previous season! And goodness am I excited to see how this is adapted.
At the beginning I was deeply annoyed to realize this was a Cinderella retelling (mostly because I don’t tend to love Cinderella retellings). But after part 1 it acted more as a background plot piece until the resolution.
At the center was always Sophie and Benedict. And while I had TV show Benedict in my head this one worked well within who I’ve worked him out to be. With the exception of maybe this one was more manipulative. But we’ll see.
And Sophie. She nearly matches Kate for sassy-ness and dearly hope she keeps that and if anything becomes more powerful in her agency in the show.

Julia Quinn’s An Offer from a Gentleman offers a charming and slightly more complex take on the Cinderella story. While the comparison is obvious, the book goes beyond the typical fairy tale with a bit more depth in both plot and character development. Benedict and Sophie, the main characters, are particularly endearing and their chemistry feels more genuine and heartfelt than in some of the earlier books in the Bridgerton series. Though the plot can be predictable at times, the emotional journey and the added layers to the characters made this story an engaging and enjoyable read.

why retell a cinderella story with such a hateable cast of characters

Charming, yearning Benedict is kind of a manipulative prick, but may be forgiven because he physically tingled and obviously fell into true and obsessive love at first sight.

I respect the female lead, Sophie, for sticking to her principles. That basically made the story have a point, you know?

All in all, it wasn't the best Bridgerton book in my opinion, but I KNOW whenever we get their season, TV Benedict and Sophie will be to die for.

I wanted to like this story more because I loved Benedict in the show, but wow. He comes across horribly in this book. I think the retelling of Cinderella itself is good, and I liked Sophie as a character. If Benedict wasn't so awful, this book would have been much better.

Ok, if I believed in half stars, this would be a 2.5. I'm not sure if it was because this book hasn't been adapted yet or if I just liked the Cinderella plot line, but I did enjoy myself for most of this book more than with the last two. There were still faults though and I didn't like how flat a lot of these stories are, as in a lot about them is quite two-dimensional. As with the last two, I have a feeling the TV version will be better, so I'm looking forward to that. I like this plot like for Benedict of the TV show as well, although I think they've made a lot of room for even more fun for his character.
