I really liked reading the stories about how humanity made it down to Antarctica. The revolution felt a bit off. Maybe the genetic modifications seemed a bit unrealistic (i know it’s science fiction) or something. If this remained a story about how humanity survived and adapted to live on Antarctica I think I’d like it better. It’s still really good though!

It was a cool book, the descriptions of the alien invasion sent chills down my spine and I particularly liked the creative 'light' themed powers the aliens seemed to have. It never makes sense when aliens end up with metal spaceships and guns- they're probably gonna be vastly different from us! Why would they create the same way as us humans? The story turns from a seemingly normal and warm young adult romance into icy cold sci-fi. The concept of genetically modified humans was cool as well, although the ending of the story fixated around a love story of an ordinary man and a centaur-like human hybrid, which I found slightly silly and hard to grasp. I guess it shows that love has the ability to blind one, to the point of not realizing it could be harmful, for the person in love and all of humanity in this case.

“He wondered what kind of person could live in a land like this. It must be a different kind of people — a savage tribe, only a savage people could survive in such cold.”

August 6 is the beginning of the end for humanity as we know it. A species from the stars — advanced, uncompromising — gives the world’s people 30 days to congregate on Antarctica, the one place they will be allowed to live. Two decades later, deep under the ice, scientists are trying to find ways to help humans endure. But are they engineering salvation or destruction?

This made it to the 2023 Top 10 list on the Currently Reading Podcast and was a “green light” for The Popcast in early 2024. It’s not something that would usually be on my radar, but the setup sounded intriguing so I figured I’d give it a try. The book is well-written, the themes complex and well-explored, and reminded me a little of Seveneves, which our book club read several years ago and had a great discussion on. The trouble is, both books’ focus on the apocalypse and overwhelming hubris of man were so terrifying that I can’t say I enjoyed either one. Further evidence that in case of apocalypse, I’m okay with being taken out on day one.

Read this if you enjoy sci-fi, apocalypse/survivalism, and Seveneves.

A slightly twisty one. I liked the way the story built throughout the book because at first I felt it was a bit hand wavey over how humanity survived in Antarctica but it built that up.
We never learned what the motivation of the aliens was but I don’t think it was necessary.
It was nice but also kind of wild that cold person Etian wanted to kill everyone but then echo was just like no (and killed Cho) and he just retreated? I suppose humanity had been driven off by that point. So it was kind of a blend of bleak but also happy ending in a weird way.
