LOVED this book! This book is wonderfully written. I loved the way the plot turns. I had a few thoughts on what would happen, but most of them were wrong. It kept me guessing with all the plot twists. I also appreciated the good steady pace. This is one of those books that you can drag out for an entire month and read a little bit of everyday, that being said it wasn't a *huge* page turner (must finish now!!!), but I did want to keep reading and was curious to see what would happen next.
Here's why I didn't give it a full 5 stars:
The characters weren't developed fully/enough for me. The important characters have specific things they're good at, but I couldn't get a true feel for who they were as people. The other reason, while I loved it, I just didn't love it enough to be a favorite and give it 5 stars.
I would recommend this book to people who are into YA/mysteries.

*Screams in YA*
Bless local library reading challenges. If it wasn’t for my library, combined with my Type C personality in completing things even if I don't want/need to, I probably would have never picked up a YA thriller. I suppose I always associated YA with high school melodrama and fantasy heavy-petting. Both not for me. But this was so good.
I love when we get an unknown POV like in this novel. Most of the story is told via Kate, but we get snippets from an unlabeled narrator and I was so excited every time they came up.
OK, so the courtroom scene at the end was so incredibly unrealistic. But that’s fine. It's YA. A little bit of theatrics is acceptable.
I’ll be reading The Lying Woods as soon as I can. I hope it lives up to this one.
Reread 2023: next time I reread this novel I have to keep a "conflict of interest" count. Because damn.

This is a great choice for readers who love April Henry's mysteries. In small town Louisiana, Kate Marino works as an intern for an aging and nearly blind district attorney who has just been handed the case of a lifetime. Four rich, tight-knit friends are suspects in the murder of a fifth boy, Grant, who was killed with his own gun. Grant died when he and friends, named, "The River Point Boys," were hunting on family property in the early morning hours following a raucous party. None of the boys is willing to admit guilt or implicate each other in Grant's death. Kate is especially interested in justice for Grant because they had been exchanging flirty texts before he died. As she delves deeper into the case, however, she realizes many things are not as they seem, most shockingly that Grant's death may have been intentional.
This book had a great spooky feel and lots of twists and turns. It wasn't predictable, and I think it will circulate frequently in our library. It's important to note that this author also wrote "The Rules for Disappearing" and "The Rules for Breaking." I hope she's already writing her next one!

Not terrible, but not stellar. Another bunch of rich kids trying to lie and cover up their shitty behavior. I think I am tired of mysteries trying to trick me and I would just like to read a really good mystery. This was not that book. Again, not terrible, but I def had to keep rewinding as my mind kept wandering. Although that could just be my brain and not this book. We'll never know...
Would give to anyone. Some language, and you know, murder.

Meh. Interesting story but ruined by the lack of research, crazy inaccuracies, and boring characters. So many of those issues could have been fixed simply by aging the characters up to college. Instead there were chapters dedicated to trying to explain plot holes in illogical ways (like how a high schooler is in multiple conflicting roles that all require masters degrees with zero experience). Almost made worse by the court scenes where the author just seems like they're yelling "see I researched this part and it's not like the movies". Main character was dull without any development. The actual case was interesting and could have been used to delve more into varying personalities but it wasn't. Plot was there but characters were not. Had potential to be great but fell very short.

This book was pretty good. Like 4.5 stars because it was a little predictable and I figured out parts of the ending early on. But the characters were all interesting and it was really hard for me to put the book down. The author knew how to keep you turning the pages.
