Tom Wolfe

3.05 AVERAGE

Formulaic Wolfe -but still a fun, quick read. It seems like he rushed to the ending a bit too quickly. Characters and plots could have been developed more.

great book with contemperary view on contemporary immigration problems

**1/2

Interesting and funny

An interesting look into the country that is Miami, focusing on Art Basel, the Miami PD, the struggle that some Cubans face as they try to fit in, and the struggle that other races have in relation to the high Cuban population.
Fast paced, thrilling, and insightful. I dug it.

For someone who lived in Miami for six years, it's interesting to see how much of the city's culture Tom Wolf was able to capture. From the idiosyncrasies of Hialeah to the idiocies of Fisher Island. It only missed the party life of Miami Beach, but maybe there are already too many TV show about it.

The story itself is OK - not great. But its worth it for someone who wants to know more about Miami than the art deco buildings and Segway tours of South Beach.

Great descriptions, as can be expected from Tom's writing, but I thought the ending was a letdown. I left feeling so unsatisfied, thinking that all the great descriptions didn't add up to much in the end.

Not the author's best book, but an entertaining read nonetheless. One problem is that most of the characters are defined by their flaws, which loom large. Wolfe gets inside them and illuminates them, and while it's not pretty, it's instructive. The other problem is that the book ends abruptly; long as it is, I wanted more denouement.

DNF @ 10%.

This book just annoyed me, so much Smack, Boom, Boom, so many freaking exclamation points. Writing is weird, and honestly I don't really understand the plot, it is all over the place.

Just got so annoyed with this that it became a DNF, life is too short for books your don't like.

I know he gets criticised but I always enjoy Wolfe's work and his gift for commenting on contemporary life through his characters and plots.

Back to Blood gave me an insight into Miami and the clash of cultures there but I don't think it's up there with his best work - felt too similar to Bonfire of the Vanities.
