A very enjoyable book. It does show its age (not necessarily a bad thing for me, I love old science fiction books) and the characters are rather one dimensional and stereotypical (the main female character in particular), yet the storyline is both strong enough and thought-provoking enough to get past this.

The novel format gives the robot stories time to develop the characters a bit more than the anthology format of the first two books, which makes this more enjoyable. A bit of an annoying 'jumping to conclusions' approach to crime solving, with the robot being made almost redundant because he cannot give testimony, but some nice twists here and there. The cities do seem pretty miserable, but give a view of how we end up with whole city planets by the time of the galactic empire.

This was a solid book. Some of the tech McGuffins need updating, but the core story is really pretty good.

It’s essentially a human and robot detective story/police procedural. I’d green light it for a Netflix series. You don’t even need Will Smith. ;)

Recommended for SF fans. Read the classics folks.

I was constantly amazed that this was written in the 50s. I loved the world he built, the economic and social challenges, the feelings and attitudes of the characters. I was absorbed from page 1.

Never really overcomes its own datedness - Fahrenheit 451 released in the same year and reads much better. Great philosophy in this one though, particularly about mankind’s fear of being "replaced".
