The shifting between stories and voices can be a little jarring, but Artemisia Gentileschi is a goddamn hero and deserves more fame.

a beautiful book that gently cuts into the soul with a painful, blunt sword. i loved the way it was structured with artemisia's perspective being in verse and her mother's stories of Susannah and Judith being in prose. i loved the comments her mother gave while telling the story, it made me feel as though I wasn't reading about it but as though I was artemisia lying on my mother's shoulder listening to her teach me a lesson through stories of strong women.

i wish I could write more but I am at a loss for words-this book touched me in so many ways. it will definitely be re-read and recommended to everyone in my life.m

“There will come a day when this horror is not the only color on your palette.” pg 282

horrifyingly beautiful. artistic, inspiring, historically-woven, multiple perspectives, interesting writing styles, and empowering. i knocked off a star for some parts of the mother’s perspective where it seemed to drag and info-dump too many names and unnecessary conversations.

*THIS IS DEFINITELY A MATURE BOOK. trigger warnings: rape, murder, torture, blood, abuse, violence

This book does a great job on bringing Artimesia and her story to light. It definitely piqued my interest in learning more about her. The pacing is different and interesting and used to good effect. My stumbling block was the inner monologue which just did not ring true to me.

I think the approach of this book is a great way to tell the story of Artemisia Gentileschi. The structure of the story of how we are in her mind and can see how thoughts
one idea to another. Hers is a dark story, but it must be told, and I appreciate the approach of the author. If any woman should need inspiration, they should read this book.

As powerful and inspiring and rage-inducing as its language was beautiful. I wished it had been longer, if only because I was so curious about how Artemisia came to advance her painting career and create some of her more famous works in the aftermath of her rape, but that's my only real complaint with the story. Everything else--from the characterization, to the intermingling of the Bible stories with Artemisia's story, to her passion for her art--was perfection.
