"Nastienka, parce que j'ai parfois des moments d'un tel désespoir, d'un tel ennui...; parce que dans ces moments-là il commence à me sembler que je ne serai jamais capable de me mettre à vivre d'une vraie vie ; parce qu'il m'a déjà semblé que j'avais perdu tout tact, tout sens du présent, du réel ; parce qu'enfin je me suis maudit moi-même; parce qu'après mes nuits fantastiques j'ai des instants de dégrisement qui sont effrayants!"

I was trying to see what the hype was about and it's perhaps that I read Madonna In a Fur Coat first that this pales in comparison, regardless of the fact that White Nights was published first. I also acknowledge that White Nights is a short story while Madonna In a Fur Coat is a whole novel so the degree of how fleshed out the characters are is going to be different.
Both books have similar themes and fairly comparable. A reclusive man changes his views on the world upon meeting a remarkable woman. He projects his dreams and hopes unto this woman and ends up being dejected as a result, inspite his good intentions.
But more than that it's also a tragic story of love and friendship that did not meet where it was supposed to, of a chance encounter between two people who longs for the same thing—companionship—but have different expectations of what that means to each other.

I am a bit confused and very befuddled by that emotional rollercoaster.
I need to read it again to form a proper opinion, I don't think I caught most stuff.
I don't know if I like the main character. I don't know if I like anybody.
But it was beautiful, in it's own way, with the dreamer and the dialogue.
Truly a timeless story.

loving in pursuit of happiness… with the anticipation of being reciprocated… i don’t think it was ever genuine in the first place :”) because it’s two people yearning for companionship– two people craving for love.
also: infatuation/situationship final boss and why tf does he keep yapping ....
but the ending tho... :,,) feeling loved is one of the scariest thing to happen, because it makes us selfish. because we want to keep feeling loved. it's addictive. and destructive at the same time.
