A crazy captain getting barazed by batteries and just by batteries and thinking that war is over just to have it if war is over just to have it start again. This was a wonderful book a wonderful book and definitely enjoyed it and will be join it and we'll be reading more of this series.

I enjoyed the ship battles more than I thought I would. The transition from acquaintances to friendship of Bush & Hornblower was off-screen, which was sad. The back cover blurb said "He also faces an adventure unique in his experience: Maria" which is really overselling what happened, i.e. someone gets a crush on him. Overall a good book.

The next (in narrative order) in the Hornblower series. As books go, it's a mid 20th century historical fiction with the eponymous Horblower a rising British Naval officer during the Napoleonic wars.

If you like methodical military historical fiction, this entry in the series continues to be excellent and entertaining. The prose is direct and unambiguous if a bit unambitious. The pacing is solid and the books are good at building the world and carrying the reader along with straightforward, easy to visualize, if a bit dry, descriptions of the setting. Where I struggle is the characters. This books is from the view point of someone other than HH but HH remains a fairly boring Mary Sue who never really faces any real character growth with the only substantive pathos being plot derived.

At first I was confused as the narration switches from Horatio to Bush, but I quickly grew to love Bush as well. It was interesting to see how others viewed Horatio, and that we didn't exactly know what happens with the Captain.

Oh this was a lot of fun! that shouldn't surprise me, considering that I loved the tv series, and this kind of historical adventure is exactly my cup of tea. (I mean, [a:Bernard Cornwell|12542|Bernard Cornwell|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1504578807p2/12542.jpg] is one of my favourite authors... That should tell you something.)

And this is pretty much Sharpe on the high seas. I was already familiar with the story (which the movie stuck to admirably, it seems), but that didn't lessen the excitement or suspense at all.

Need to get me the rest of the series now!
