I super skimmed this so don't think it would be fair to rate it.

Great story told from the perspective of two individuals. One, a child, suffering from unfound guilt, and the other, an adult, without a conscience who was doing evil things, not feeling any guilt.

I read this for a book group and can’t fault the choice of the subject matter for timeliness: when better to read a novel about the 1918 Flu epidemic than during the current Coronavirus pandemic? But I don’t have to admire a piece of improbable melodrama populated by wooden characters. The author works hard to generate the sort of “feels” some readers seem to crave, with florid
prose like “the black manacle of grief closing around her shattered heart and locking into place with a horrible sickening thud.” The writing felt so amateurish that it made me question the author’s historical research: her descriptions of people dropping dead in the space of an hour or two from the onset of illness with blood pouring from every orifice sounded more like Ebola than the flu. An irredeemable villainess and a lot of unlikely and contrived plot twists and did not help matters either. Not a fan of this one.

This book wasn't what I was expecting, but I loved it nonetheless. I was really invested in the characters, the plot had enough twists to keep it interesting, and the ending was mostly satisfying.

I would definitely recommend for fans of historical fiction.

When the Spanish Flu hits Philadelphia, 12-year-old Pia is left to take care of her twin brothers.  While she is out finding food for all of them to survive, the brothers are taken.  For the next several years, it is Pia's mission to find her brothers.

I really enjoy works of historical fiction, and reading about the Spanish Flu was interesting.  There are so many correlations to the feelings and the way people acted during COVID-19.  This is just proof that human nature doesn't really change over time.

The character of Bernice was really well written.  I couldn't stand her and wanted to shout at her each time she shared her thoughts.

I will look for other books by this author, as this was the first I have read by her.
