i was so skeptical because of all the mixed reviews but i loved the writing, the ending, and the weirdness! there were even parts that really hit the feels. absolutely look up trigger warnings though because the homophobia is BRUTAL, to say the least.

I felt like there was a lot going on for such a short book, I didnt see the need for the hate crimes along with the other aspects of the story. They didn't seem like they had a whole lot to do with eachother. The ending was wholesome
Graphic: Sexual assault, Blood, Physical abuse, Injury/Injury detail, Homophobia, Hate crime, Rape, and Sexual violence
Minor: Racial slurs

3.5 ⭐️ check trigger warnings!
What I liked: descriptive writing style, that kept me going. The immediate attention to detail.
Short and quick chapters
The beginning
Prologue was actually one of my favorite parts and I wanted more!
What I didn’t like:
Unnecessary gang rape
Malik not knowing how to defend himself & forgetting
That epilogue?!
I didn’t like how some story lines weren’t flowing like it felt like fluff
So-so:
Religious aspects
- I have my own problems w religion but it was interesting for me to read something so interwoven with biblical aspects from someone (LaRocca) not being of faith and I get it is for his mom
Is that why we got that epilogue

eric larocca's "everything the darkness eats" takes you through a horrific tale with interwoven perspectives that all reside in a small connecticut after a series of individuals mysteriously disappear. if you're wanting to get into larocca's works but don't want to start with anything super intense, i would dip my toe into ETDE. the first larocca book i read was "things have gotten worse since we last spoke", which you can imagine was a jarring start to my extreme horror journey lol!! most certainly check trigger warnings before reading–it does tackle some heavy and potentially upsetting content. i will provide a list of ones i caught below.
the only portion of the book i didn't like was ghost very frequently voicing his hatred for God. i understand it is relevant to the theme of the book and his character though. all in all, "everything the darkness eats" is a riveting and entertaining read that will keep you guessing throughout every chapter.
trigger warnings:
- homophobia
- hate crimes revolting homosexuality
- death of a spouse
- suicidal ideation
- blasphemy

Everything about this book was absolutely deliciously dreadful!
The characters were dynamic and full of emotion and felt as real to me as anyone in my day to day life, and that for sure some creepy things can be happening at any time and can parallel with more real horrors of day to day lives and it's all horrid but damn the pacing and voice of this book is incredible. If you have the chance, listen to the audiobook version of this book it was so well done! Will be rereading again soon

A great concept...for a short.
That's then turned into one of the worst pieces of writing I've ever read.
Avoid. Believe me.
Shock for shock's sake and the most deus ex machina ending. Genuinely, I'd say children could write better work...and do.

As a fan of horror and an avid reader of anything queer, I was excited about this one. I started yesterday and found it hard to put down, but alas work intervened and I had to stop reading when I was about 70% in.
When I picked it back up after work there was a gay bashing scene that concluded with the character being sexually assaulted. I texted a friend and told her I would bail. Being so close to the finish line, I decided to see what happened next. Reader, the situation did not improve... but then again by that point I was soured by that specific act of gratuitous violence so I may be biased.
