Mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, it had an interesting premise and I’m a big fan of the magical realism concept here. The backstory of the dress makers was intriguing as was the character development at the beginning. Pretty early on, the dress charms seemed to be a sideline detail though.

Some of the dialogue between characters was sporadic. As each chapter switches from each characters POV, some conversations seem to end abruptly or skimp on details whereas other seemingly less important conversations were repeated multiple times. It’s predictable and cheesy - the stars continued to align as “fate” and “destiny” took the wheel for the majority of the book.

This historical fiction novel has two timeframes. One is based in France in 1943 and centers around Soline, a wedding dress maker. The other occurs in 1985 and centers around Rory, an inspiring art gallery owner. The different stories weave together well, although I did at times connect more with Soline’s story. The book had a slow start, but then it hooked me in. I will fully admit I giggled every time the book mentions “giving someone a happy ending.” Also, I am much more a fan of messy endings in books. This ending was tightly tied and topped with the fanciest of bows. As much as that isn’t my normal jam, this entire story just grew on me. I fell in love with both Soline and Rory.

I did this one as an audiobook and I felt the narration was fantastic.
