In this volume Lucifer has abdicated hell and turned the keys over to Morpheus the Dream Lord . Lucifer sent every one condemned to hell back to earth ,there begins a power-play amongst many to see who will take over Hell(. As Morpheus is the unwilling lord. The story and the illustrations are always top-notch. Gaiman has a gift of weaving bizarre snd intriguing stories. This is good as a standalone or as I am choosing to do ,reading them in sequence.
I think this may be one of my favourite books in the series. I’ve had this in my head for around 30 years because it stays with you.
Little Chaos. Loki. Dream spending the first few pages being a total drama Queen. Everything about hell.
That ending. It’s so perfect.z I’m so glad I’m reading these again ready for the series.

The story seems to be hitting its stride in this one, which is nice

Typical comic book plot line really...though it had it's moments (Like finding out that dream had cast an ex lover into hell (that shows a different side indeed). In short, death guilts dream into releasing an ex lover from hell but to do so he has to go through Lucifer and...well i won't ruin it.
It also started to annoy me in this one how the endless aren't really gods but not quite human. They are very emotional, petty, squabbling things that go through all the sorts of drama that humans do but of course...they aren't quite there, sort of like the greek gods, frequently meddling in human affairs and act just like us...but of course they are gods. They hang in this middle zone which can be frustrating as hell but it also makes the story that much more tantalizing.
I did love the interactions between death and dream they always make for good reading, the personalties contrast so greatly (although he is quite angsty in this one, though i find it charming when gaiman lets dream get that way haha). It's no doubt that they are the closest siblings in the family.
I really liked the art in this one as well. If i had it my way the whole series would look more like this. Alas...

This one went dark compared to previous volumes. Although, I guess I should've somewhat expected it. I knew about the whole going to hell bit. Before reading I didn't think I would love this as much as I did. The synopsis was a bit vague. But then those stories that you think are just small snippets from before link in here. Everything all comes together, that may not of made sense before. I absolutely love it when a story does that. It shows how well planned out things are. I loved meeting all these deities, and I love that they seemed to be pretty much true to the original. I loved Lucifer and his proper introduction, so now I really want to read his continuation. The writing is fantastic of course, and his character is clearly shown their own personality. It definitely feels like things will move forward more from here as things pick up.
I've mostly been reading Sandman because I want to read its spin-offs, but it's not bad.
back to the goodness. what was that last travesty about? a quick turnaround for drugs or to pay some other ransom?
I am excited and utterly terrified to see how Netflix will adapt this volume. The CGI, the gore, the whimsical visuals, the cosmic forces, the depictions of ancient deities, MORPHEUS IN THE MOUTH OF AZAZEL... Stuff of dreams, stuff of nightmares. Can't wait.
Also I am ashamed it took me three volumes to listen to the audio rendering on Audible version narrated by Gaiman himself with the help of that stellar unique cast made up of James McAvoy, Michael Sheen, David Tennant, Bill Nighy, Andy Serkis and so many others, with all that extra context, with all those enrapturing ambient sounds. It is fully encapsulating and enthralling in combination with the comics. Gosh, pure escapism. 10/10.

This was an interesting arc and the conclusion was both what was I expectinging but not quite.
