Boek vol levenslust, en alles blijft mogelijk of zou steeds kunnfn gebeuren. Verteller aanwezige man die graag spitsvondig gevonden wil worden, irriteerde me.

this is the slowest i've ever read this book. it's also probably the 30th time i've read it. i have the art tattooed on my leg, my copy's got a million dog eared pages of all my favorite moments. it's got handwritten notes & drawings from friends. it's got pencil marks on great sentences. still life forever & always. i know how to make love stay!

"There's a tendency today to absolve individuals of moral responsibility and treat them as victims of social circumstance. You buy that, you pay with your soul. It's not men who limit women, it's not straights who limit gays, it's not whites who limit blacks. What limits people is that they don't have the fucking nerve or imagination to star in their own movie, let alone direct it."

Fuck you, Tom Robbins. That is all.

I was half way through re-reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance which I first read as a philosophy undergraduate in 1983 on the grounds it was likely to be more fun to read than Ayer or Hume. It was more fun in 1983 but in 2022 I was finding it a bit tedious. So I decided to reread a book I first read in 1981, as it was next to Zen on the bookshelf.

My original copy of Still Life with Woodpecker was left back in Mthatha but it felt and looked just the same. However, rather like Zen, I think it is better read the young side of 30 (I was 18 when I read it but I'll give it some leeway). The self indulgence began to irritate and the cod philosophy made me yearn for Ayer and Hume. I'm glad I read it and loved it at 18 and didn't pick it up for the first time at 58
