Almost four stars, but I'm knocking it down for a) a fucking cliffhangerish ending and b) an insta-love kind of romance. I seriously dislike books that end feeling incomplete. I've invested all this time and interest in a book and there's not even a halfway decent stopping point at the end. By all means, leave some questions or overarching plot points for future volumes, but please don't end with huge events left dangling. Yes, they (mostly) solved the mystery on Gaia, but
Spoilerthey just left an impending invasion about to happen
. As for the romance, pretty much from the first time they see each other Jules and Mia obsess over how cute/pretty the other is and it just goes downhill from there. Get back to the space archaeology and stop mooning over the person you just met yesterday!

Also, I 100% called the ending. Pretty much the entire book I was thinking
Spoilerwhat if this is all an elaborate trap set by that abandoned colony?

I did not think I would like Unearthed as much as I did! The main reason I picked it up was because it was co-written by Amie Kaufman, who wrote Illuminae with Jay Kristoff which I really loved. Going into Unearthed, I had little to no expectations for it, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Unearthed felt very Indiana Jones-ish the whole time, which I am not at all disappointed about.

Our two narrators, Jules and Amelia (Mia), reminded me so much of Carter and Sadie from The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan, it was honestly uncanny!
Spoiler Well, except for the fact that Jules and Mia kissed a couple of times, and Sadie would rather die than kiss her brother.
They were similar even down to their personal appearances: Sadie and Mia both have bright colours streaked through their hair, and Carter and Jules both had dark skin and hair, but not too dark as their mums both had white skin and dads had dark.

Because I kept seeing Sadie and Carter in Jules and Mia, I do think it helped me to enjoy Unearthed more, along with the overall Indiana Jones feel of the novel.

“I'm improvising, but I've been doing that my whole life.”

“When we allow ourselves to explore, we discover destinations that were never on our map.”

Aún así quiero leer la secuela xD. (¿Quién me entiende?

“We may be the only ones who think that braving a series of crumbling death traps is proof of good decision making.”

Surprising save there!

Started out quite cheesy, I had to force myself to read the first 10-15%.
After that, it started getting better. And then it got intriguing.
With this set up the sequel has a very high potential!

AHHHH CLIFFHANGER NO!! 😱

The traps were boring and I was more interested in the novel beforehand and after the traps were done because when one says traps, my mind tends to run towards Scooby Doo and Lara Croft and Unearthed failed in that aspect. And two aren't enough to hold it, if the traps had been more interesting and had there been a group exploring I could have loved this but the two of them just weren't compelling enough by themselves. That ending though, I am intrigued.

WOW. INCREDIBLE.

Two diverse main characters, I loved them both! Jules, a tad bit more because he’s a linguist but Amelia is KICK. ASS.

The middle of this dragged a bit for me but I loved all the adventures and treasure-hunting. Has the same vibes as Lara Croft / The Mummy / Indiana Jones but in space /National Treasure conspiracy-ness. It’s just great. A solid, fun, action-packed read.

AND ALSO. ALL OF THE PLOT TWISTS. Especially near the end.

I ALSO CANNOT BELIEVE THEY GOT AWAY WITH THAT LAST LINE. I CANNOT. HOW.
