This was the best that this author pairing have written so far and I’m a fan of their previous series. UNEARTHED provided immediate connection with a story that left me clueless, breathless, full of adrenaline and utterly drawn in.
Neither Jules nor Mia should find themselves on the planet of the Undying at the age they are, but both are there illegally on missions of their own importance, passion-filled and wanting to change the direction of their own lives and earth’s. What ensues is a twisty, unexpected tale of a civilisation long-gone that seemed to have intentions for earth to save it from something. This is a story with bandits, criminals, firsts, genius and survival. I felt absolutely on the edge of my seat from start to finish, which is kind of uncomfortable but completely worth it.
Mia was the making of Jules and Jules became the making of Mia, where integrity grew and selfishness diminished. Their friendship and bond might have been over a short period of time together but they experienced so much, I believed their tether. Often side characters are important to me in books, but with UNEARTHED I felt the opposite, Mia and Jules were the focus and all surrounding were supplementary; it worked.
I’m pretty impatient at where I’ve been left, but like the best of books, I can hang on for the kind of quality of writing that isn’t everyday, or every read. Spooner and Kaufman wrote seamlessly together and I am bitten by these worlds they have created. I still don’t know who the goodies and baddies really are!
A copy of this book was provided by the publisher through netgalley in return for a honest review.

Amelia has traveled to Gaia to be a savior for her family and Jules has traveled to Gaia to be a savior for his family name and to finally get the answers his father deserves and that he himself needs. The two come from completely different worlds and lives but quickly realize that they have the perfect balance to answer the dangerous puzzle the Undying have left behind for them.

I’m a huge fan of Kaufman & Spooner and the worlds they create in their books. Once again they’ve created a tense, mysterious territory and a unique story as well as a love story that I’d be lying if I️ said I️ wasn’t excited to see progress. Jules was an obvious fave simply because of his pureness and willingness to do right even when everything else was going wrong, and how could you not love Mia? Totally resourceful and capable of saving Jules’ butt on multiple occasions. I️ love the strong female presence in this book and the way your heart stops when you know they’re in danger (which is pretty much the whole book). I’m so excited for the next installment!

Amie Kaufman. Every single time I read one of her books it solidifies her position of one of my favorite authors of all time. The only books by Meagan Spooner I've read were cowritten by Amie, so I can only speak of her books written as part of this duo, but I've loved all of them so far. I didn't love this quite as much as the Starbound trilogy (yet! I haven't read the second one yet) but I did really love it.
I don't think I've ever enjoyed a male character's POV as much as I did Jules's. He was funny and instantly likeable--honestly I liked him faster than I did Mia, which never happens to me. I love them both equally now, and that's perfect because when you really love both characters, the POV switching is less jarring. In fact, it was barely noticable on this one. They fit together so perfectly that I never really needed to adjust to a POV switch.
Oh my god the slow, gentle romance!!! Both of them being like "now is not the time for me to develop feelings" and "I should not have feelings for this person, it could never work. Them slowly learning (and relearning) to truly trust each other. Starting to hold hands while they run for their lives. Jules blowing on her freezing fingers!!!!! I don't know why that soft little moment knocked me dead but it DID. It just felt like such a pure, gentle, loving little thing to do.
I did see most of the plot twists that happened along the way coming, but the final one? I did not see that coming and I'm so excited to read the second book.

Got back to this book and updating it to a solid 3.5 stars.
Oh my god. This book guys... THIS BOOK! I don't know what it is about Kaufman and Spooner together, but they just seem to make magic happen!
I honestly hadn't even heard they had a new series coming out until Brittany sent me it for Christmas (Thank you Brittany!), and I'm so freaking glad she did! There's a good chance I would have missed this book if she hadn't.
OK, so we start of with Mia who is hiding out from two soldiers and she's trying to figure out her next move. She's been sent by her boss Mink to the alien planet of Gaia - which was inhabited by an alien race called the Undying. The Undying sent out a broadcast around 50 years ago about the destruction of their planet and the end of their race. Within their broadcast they mention having the key to the survival of the Earth. Ever since then, the humans have been trying to find whatever technology they can from this alien race to help the Earth survive, while scouring the rest of the planet for the saving grace they're positive is there. Mia ends up getting herself into a bit of a trouble when she makes herself known to the soldiers, but with the help of a smart and very awkward English boy they manage to escape from the soldiers and take off on their own. Jules convinces Mia he knows where the most valuable treasures are that she'll be able to take home, but Jules has his own agenda and he needs Mia to help him survive.
I loved both Mia and Jules. Mia fought to earn the right to be the scavenger that Mink sent off to Gaia. She's tough, fierce and smart. She's determined to do whatever she has to to get her hands on something valuable because she's trying to save her sister. Her sister is the only family she has, and she would do absolutely anything for her. Jules is very awkward, but also super smart. He's trying to hide his real identity from Mia so she doesn't uncover what he's really here to do. He's trying to clear his fathers name and prove that there's more to the message the Undying sent than people think.
Of course there's some romance, but despite the fact that Mia and Jules have only known each other for a few days, I actually quite enjoyed them together. It wasn't a main focus of the book, but they did have some internal dialogue from both characters throughout the book. And when they eventually acted on their feelings, it didn't feel rushed at all. It was a life or death situation so you've just got to grab the moment when you can!
Most of the book is about their exploration of the alien structure (basically a temple) that Jules is leading them to. There's all sorts of traps and trials for them to figure out to make it to the next room of the temple. But as they're going through and Jules is deciphering the alien glyphs on the walls to see what they have to do, he's beginning to feel like there's a deeper meaning, a warning in some of the glyphs. And when they get to the last room.... well, Jules didn't even have a clue how anything in that room was possible.
I'm not going to go into any more detail about the rest of the book because Kaufman and Spooner seem to be the queens of plot twists because MY GOD. There were clues leading up the big reveal on the very last page, but I just didn't see it coming! It's certainly confusing, but I'm so intrigued to see exactly how that twist could even be possible! And I can't believe I've got a year to wait now for the next book.

A fun and fast paced read with lovely characters and a tantalizing mystery to unravel! I’m excited to start Undying to see where this brings us!
My favorite duo!!!
I absolutely loved this book. These two have phenomenal world-building skills. It had a slow but steady first half, which I'm coming to learn is the norm, but it still gripped me to enough to want to keep reading. The second half flew by, and I was absolutely enthralled. My favorite part? Probably the easter egg of one of Jules's code names for Starbound fans.
I have absolutely loved seeing these two grow in their writing, both together and separately. I can't wait to pick up Undying next week.

A light YA romance archaeological adventure in space. Meh.
I was able to read this thanks to netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This book is an interesting read. I like the mystery in it and the adventure. I think I know where it’s going with that cliffhanger but I guess I’ll have to wait for book 2 to confirm. Not a huge fan of the romance, I really think Mia and Jules would have been so much better as antagonistic friends versus a romantic couple, to me the romance just felt forced and awkward and detracted from everything else going on. I enjoyed their dynamic otherwise.
