Kate Morton’s ability to keep readers enthralled from page to page, century to century is an enviable talent. This book taught me so much about time, it’s value, and the suffering memories between various people and the objects they have in common. A thought-provoking historical mystery you won’t want to put down.
Fun and generally light for me. I had thought this would be half-baked fluff, but the storyline is generally better crafted than I expected. Although I had hoped storylines would be pulled together a little tighter-- the mystery of why Elodie's mother needed to go to Birchwood at *that* time seemed underbaked to me.
And Elodie was such hilarious self-insert fantasy. Introvert with vivacious, artsy best friend, works a dream job as an archivist, and is about to marry a wealthy finance bro with whom she has no discernable relationship! THAT'S where the fluff of this book lies. Fortunately she's not the only point-of-view character, and the rest, while they are themselves well-worn tropes, a fleshed out enough to have most of the edges come together.

This is going to be one of those books that stays with me for a long while. At first I found all the intersecting story lines and time lines really confusing but the author crafts them together in such a superb way. The writing is beautiful and the characters are so real. I want more of their stories!

I love Kate Morton's books but this one was a bit of a slog. Too many storylines and too many characters. It was a lot of, "wait...who is this again and which storyline are they tied to?" It also felt like it took 32 years to read.

I find that I'm having a hard time deciding how I feel about this book. I think it was beautifully written, and the plot really intrigued me.
However, I had a problem with the execution. I found it very slow moving, jumping to lots of perspectives (which I usually don't mind) and at times I was just bored. I kept reading because there was something that had grabbed my interest, and there would be points that would be so enjoyable I'd find myself smiling.
The last 100 pages where the best in my opinion. It started piecing all the perspectives together, and I didn't want to stop reading. Unfortunately, as much as I enjoyed the end, the first 300 pages is what kept me from giving it a 4 stars.
